Field Update

Yesterday, 18 September 2017, a woman was killed after she was mistakenly hit with a live bullet in her house in ‘Abasan al-Kabirah village, east of Khan Yunis. This incident is part of the state of proliferation of weapons and assault on the rule of law in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).

According to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR’s) investigation, at approximately 17:45 on Monday, 18 September 2017, medical sources at the Gaza European Hospital in Khan Yunis announced the death of Renad ‘Ammar Qdaih (21) after she was hit with a bullet to the neck.  The bullet mistakenly unleashed from a gun in her house in ‘Abasan al-Kabirah village.

Police said to PCHR’s fieldworker that the police opened an investigation, arrested the accused person, seized the weapon, and transferred the dead body to the Forensic Medicine Department. He added that the preliminary information indicates that the incident occurred by mistake when Renad’s husband was cleaning the weapon. He also said that the investigation is ongoing according to legal requirements.

The Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) closely follows up the investigations and calls upon the competent authorities to take necessary procedures in order to protect civilians from the dangers of weapons.
