Young Man Killed Mistakenly in Jabalia and Another One Wounded in Personal Dispute in Gaza

On
Wednesday, 28 May 2014, a young man was killed by a bullet that was
accidentally unleashed from a gun which was mishandled by his younger brother
in the northern Gaza Strip town of Jabalia. 
In a separate incident, on Tuesday, 27 May 2014, a man was wounded by a
bullet fired at him by another person due to a personal dispute. These incidents
are part of the phenomenon of misuse of weapons and breaches of the rule of law
prevailing in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).

 

According
to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR),
at approximately 21:00 on Wednesday, 28 May 2014, ‘Abdel Rahman Zaki al-Anqah
(17) was killed by 2 bullets that were accidentally unleashed from a
Kalashnikov rifle which was mishandled by his 13-year-old brother in their
house in Jabalia in the northern Gaza Strip. 
PCHR learnt that the police arrived at the scene and opened an
investigation into the incident.

 

In
a separate incident, on Tuesday, 27 May 2014, a gunman opened fire at Wael
Rushdi Khalaf (51) when he was in al-Shera’a Café at Gaza beach.  As a result, he was wounded by a bullet that
entered the leg and exited the abdomen.  Medical
sources at Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, where he was transferred, described his
condition as moderate.  The police opened
an investigation into the incident, took the testimony of the wounded person,
and arrested the suspected shooter.

 

PCHR
condemns these incidents, which are part of the state of proliferation of
weapons and assaults on the rule of law in the oPt.  PCHR calls upon the Public Prosecution to
seriously investigate these incidents and bring the perpetrators before justice.
