Women Injured by Home-Made Rocket in al-Maghazi Camp and Bomb Detonated in al-Remal Neighborhood in Gaza

Field Update

  

On Thursday, 16 June 2011, a woman was moderately injured when a
home-made rocket hit her house in al-Maghazi refugee camp in the central Gaza
Strip. In another incident, a home-made
bomb was detonated in al-Remal neighborhood in the west of Gaza City this
morning. These incidents are part of the
continued state of security chaos and proliferation of weapons in the Occupied
Palestinian Territory.
 

 

According to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Center for
Human Rights (PCHR), at approximately 22:30 on Thursday, 16 June 2011, a
home-made rocket hit the first floor of a 3-storey house belonging to Suleiman
‘Ayash Abu ‘Owaida in al-Maghazi refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip. As a result, Samia ‘Ayash Abu ‘Owaida, 18,
was injured by shrapnel throughout his body, and the house and neighboring
house belonging to Sameer Sa’id Abu Jayab was damaged. The police arrived at the area and opened an
investigation, and officers of the Internal Security Service took the remaining
parts of the rocket. 

 

In a separate incident, at approximately 00:00 on Sunday, 19 June
2011, a heavy blast rocked al-Remal neighborhood in the west of Gaza City. The blast resulted from the explosion of a
bomb thrown by unknown person on a space near Ansar security compound. No casualties were reported.

 

PCHR is concerned over increasing casualties resulting from the
misuse of weapons, which is part of the state of security chaos and proliferation
of weapons in the oPt. PCHR calls upon
competent authorities to investigate these incidents, take necessary steps to
ensure their non-recurrence and to provide protection to civilians.
