Update
In
the past three days, three civilians were injured, including one who sustained
serious injuries, in two separate incidents related to misuse of weapons in the
southern Gaza Strip town of Rafah. These
incidents are a part of the state of security chaos and misuse of weapons
plaguing the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT).
According
to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR),
at approximately 18:00 on Friday evening, 28 August 2010, Ahmed Mohammed
al-Hamayda, 22, from Rafah, arrived at the European Hospital in Khan
Yunis. He was seriously injured by
shrapnel throughout the body. His hands
and right leg were amputated. Also Basel
Mohammed al-Bari, 22, from Rafah, arrived to the European Hospital with
shrapnel injuries throughout the body. Sources from the Palestinian police stated to a PCHR fieldworker that
the two civilians were injured as they were and other civilians playing with an
explosive device in an open area in the west of Rafah.
In a
another incident, at approximately 22:00 on Thursday evening, Hani Mahmoud
Ghabboun, 23, sustained shrapnel injuries throughout the body as a detonator
exploded in his house in al-Junaina neighborhood in Rafah. Ghabboun was transferred to Martyr Abu Yousef
al-Najjar Hospital in Rafah for treatment. Three fingers of his left hand were amputated. Medical sources described his injuries as
moderate.
PCHR
strongly condemns these incidents which are a part of the security chaos and
misuse of weapons plaguing the OPT, and calls upon competent authorities to
ensure the non-recurrence of such incidents.
