RAJI SOURANI VISITS ANDALUSIA TO RECEIVE THE

SOLIDARITY AWARD FOR THE PRISIONERS PROJECT PRESENTED BY THE UNION OF MUNICIPALITIES IN THE PROVINCE AND ATTENDS SEVERAL MEETINGS.

On 4 December 2005 and in commemoration of the International Human Rights Day, the Union of Municipalities in the Costa del Sol, Malaga, selected PCHR to receive its solidarity award for its work in defence of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. PCHR was selected from a group of more than 22 organizations, including the International Committee for the Red Cross and other international and national organizations. Al-Quds Association for Solidarity with People in Arabic Countries in Malaga, nominated PCHR for the award.

The President of the Union of Municipalities, Mr. Juan Sanchez, stated that the question of the Palestinian prisoners is an often forgotten issue, but it is at the core of the Palestinian cause. Mr. Sanchez pointed that the work of PCHR one of the most respected in the field of Human Rights. PCHR has been fighting for the rights and freedom of the Palestinian prisoners since its establishment. This award is considered to have full political meaning in light of the latest developments in Palestine, especially after the implementation of the unilateral Israeli disengagement plan.

During his visit to Spain, Mr. Sourani held meetings in Al-Quds Association, which has been supporting PCHR’s work for years, to develop working plans for the future. In addition, the meetings served to update members of Al-Quds Association and other organizations about the situation of Gaza Strip after the disengagement plan and the “opening” of the Rafah Crossing. In his meetings, Mr. Sourani expressed his concern about the future of Gaza Strip, and about the “interpretation” of the unilateral disengagement plan in international community. Concerning the future elections in Palestine, Mr. Sourani stated that upcoming elections are a strategic development in the legitimacy of the Palestinian people. The elections will be an example to the world; as Palestine is the only country to have democratic elections under occupation.

In addition, Mr. Sourani met a group of jurists and experts in International Law, Humanitarian Law and Spanish Criminal Law to discuss the possibility of utilizing International Jurisdiction in Spain against those who committed war crimes against Palestinian civilians. Additional meetings are expected to consider submitting cases in Spanish courts against suspected war criminals. This meeting was organised and arranged by Al-Quds Association for Solidarity in Malaga; and its President Cristina Ruiz – Cortina Sierra attended it with the Mr. Sourani.
