Field update

On Monday morning, a Palestinian man from Jenin refugee camp was killed after being shot by unknown gunmen.  This incident falls under the state of proliferation of weapons and assault on the rule of law in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).

According to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), at approximately 07:15 on Monday, 01 June 2020, unknown gunmen opened fire at Fares Mahmoud Husain Ammar (32), from Jenin refugee camp, north of the West Bank, as 12 live bullets penetrated his body, killing him immediately. It was reported that the gunmen approached the victim and shot him dead from a close distance, as Ammar, who distributed baked goods for al-Nour Bakery in Jenin, stepped out of his vehicle to deliver an order to one of the groceries in the camp. The gunmen fled the scene and Ammar’s body was transferred to Dr. Khalil Suleiman Governmental Hospital in Jenin. The Palestinian police arrived at the scene and opened an investigation in the crime.

According to media sources, Akram al-Rajoub, the Governor of Jenin, said that unknown gunmen opened fire at Ammar in Jenin refugee camp and fled, and he stressed that the security establishment will pursue them and bring them to justice.

PCHR condemns this incident and considers it an outrageous attack on the rule of law in the oPt; and calls upon the competent authorities to take the necessary measures in the face of the increasing manifestations of the use of weapons outside the rule of law.
