Update
On Saturday evening, 10 April 2010,
Suhaib Isma’il Barbakh, 18, from Khan Yunis, was killed by a gunshot in the
course of a dispute between the al-Akhras and Abu Tahla (Barbakh) families in
al-Salam neighborhood in the southern Gaza Strip town of Rafah.
According to investigations
conducted by PCHR, at approximately 18:00 on Saturday, a dispute erupted
between members of the Abu Tahla (Barbakh) family and those of al-Akhras family
in al-Salam neighbourhood in the south of Rafah. The dispute escalated and firearms were used against
members of the Barbakh family. As a
result, Suhaib Barbakh, from Khan Yunis, was seriously wounded by a gunshot to
the abdomen. He was evacuated to the
hospital, but medical efforts to save his life failed.
The police initiated an
investigation and contacted notables of the al-Akhras family. One of those suspected of shooting in the
dispute was handed over to the police, who continued to look for other suspects.
PCHR strongly condemns this
incident, which is part of the state of security chaos and misuse of weapons
prevailing in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. PCHR further calls upon the
Attorney-General’s office to seriously investigate it and bring the
perpetrators to justice.
