Israeli Military Prosecutor Decides to Release Zeyad Ihsan El-Hindi without Bail
Eyad El-Alami, director of PCHR’s Legal Unit, announced that after the intervention of PCHR’s legal representative the Israeli Military Prosecutor ended the detention order against Zeyad Ihsan Mohammad El-Hindi (41), who is from Gaza but lives in Hebron. Today, 1 August 2007, the prosecutor asked the Israeli military court to release El-Hindi without bail.
Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) detained El-Hindi on 17 June 2007 in Hebron, and transferred him to Ashkelon prison under the suspicion that he posed a security threat. EL-Hindi’s family appointed PCHR to represent their son immediately after his detention. The Centre submitted a complaint against the bad detention conditions of El-Hindi, who is diabetic.
On 26 July 2007, the Israeli military court decided to release El-Hindi on a bail of 2,500 New Israeli Shekels due to lack of evidence against him. The prosecutor appealed the release order. And on 29 July 2007, the Israeli military court rejected the prosecution’s appeal.
On 1 August 2007, the prosecutor decided to release El-Hindi without bail after PCHR’s intervention to explain the detainee’s financial situation. The prosecutor claimed that decision to release El-Hindi unconditionally came in light of the results of his interrogation.
