Field Update
This morning, the car of Hussam Khader, for
Member of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC), was subject to gunfire by
unknown persons in Balata refugee camp, east of Nablus. This attack is part of the phenomenon of
misuse of weapons and assaults on the rule of law in the occupied Palestinian
territory (oPt).
According to investigations conducted by the
Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR), at approximately 02:15 on Monday,
01 July 2013, masked gunmen opened fire at a car belonging to Hussam Khader,
former PLC Member, which was parked in front of his house in Yaffa area in
Balata refugee camp, east of Nablus. The
car was extensively damaged as it was hit by at least 20 bullets. Khader stated to PCHR that he woke up hearing
sounds of shooting, and he saw a number of masked gunmen who were firing at the
car before leaving the area.
A few hours later, the Palestinian police
arrived at the scene and opened an investigation.
PCHR condemns this attack, which is part of the
phenomenon of misuse of weapons and assaults on the rule of law in the oPt, and
calls upon the Attorney General to investigate it and bring the perpetrators
before justice.
