Firing at the House of PLC Member Majed Abu Shammala in Ramallah

Field Update

 

On Monday, 13 May 2013, unidentified
persons fired at the house of Mr. Majed Abu Shammala, Member of the Palestinian
Legislative Council (PLC) representing Fatah Movement.  This incident demonstrates the misuse of
weapons and repeated violations of the rule of law in the occupied Palestinian
territory (oPt).

 

According to investigations conducted by
the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) and the testimony of Abu
Shammala’s son, Jihad, at approximately 2:15 on Monday, 13 May 2013, unidentified
gunmen fired at Majed Mohammed Abu Shammala’s house, located in Khalil Totah
Street in al-Teirah neighborhood in Ramallah in the central West Bank. Upon
hearing the gunshots, Jihad went out of the house to find his father’s Mitsubishi
Pajero car hit by several bullets. When the incident took place Abu Shammala
was not at home.

 

The Palestinian police arrived at the
scene and found bullet shells. A police investigation has been opened into the
incident.

 

PCHR condemns this incident, which is
demonstrates the lack of security, state of chaos, and repeated violations of
the rule of law in the oPt. PCHR calls on the Attorney General in Ramallah to
open an independent investigation into the incident and to bring the
perpetrators to justice.
