Field Update02 October 2022 Yesterday, a person was killed, and 4 others were wounded by gunfire in family dispute in Balata refugee camp, east of Nablus. This incident is indicative of the state of weapon proliferation and assault on the rule of law in the occupied Palestinian territory.According to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), at approximately 19:00, on Friday, 30 September 2022, a family broke out between members of 2 families at the end of Balata refugee camp in Nablus and escalated to use of firearms. As a result, 5 persons were wounded, including a child, a father and 3 of his sons; one of them succumbed to his wounds and was identified as Waseem Ahmad Soleiman Al-Shaf’ie (33). The latter was shot with a live bullet that hit below his right armpit and directly penetrated his heart, while the rest sustained moderate injuries and taken to Rafidia Governmental Hospital.Police spokesperson, Colonel Luay Irzeiqat, said that the police headed to the scene to control the dispute and opened an investigation into the incident.PCHR condemns this crime and is deeply concerned over the recurrence of incidents of proliferation of weapons and denounces the use of firearms in personal and family disputes; a matter which jeopardizes the right to life, rule of law and Palestinian civil peace.PCHR calls upon the Palestinian Authority to take serious steps to end the state of proliferation of weapons and promptly impose the rule of law in order to maintain civil peace in light of the recent increase in murder crimes in the occupied Palestinian territory.
