Civilian Killed in Balatah Refugee Camp in Familial Dispute

Field Update

A Palestinian civilian was killed today at dawn in Nablus after he was exposed to gunfire on grounds of a family dispute. This incident is part of the state of the proliferation of weapons and assault on the rule of law in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).

According to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR), today at dawn, 09 August 2016, an armed person opened fire at Alaa Ali Mahmoud al-Nejmi (30), an officer at the Palestinian Intelligence Service, while the latter was present at the main entrance to Balatah refugee camp near his house, southeast of Nablus. Al-Nejmi sustained a bullet wound right to the heart. He was then transported to Rafidiya Governmental Hospital in the city where he was pronounced dead.

The Palestinian police and security services arrived at the scene and initiated a field investigation. According to preliminary information, the shooting occurred on grounds of a family dispute.

Therefore, the Palestinian security services surrounded houses of a certain family in the camp and arrested a person from that family as a suspect in the shooting against al-Nejmi.

PCHR condemns this incident and is concerned over the recurrence of such incidents due to the use of firearms. PCHR further calls upon the competent authorities to take the necessary measures to put an end to this phenomenon and maintain the safety and security of civilians.
