Civilian Killed and Two Others Wounded, Including Child, During Dispute in Balata Refugee Camp

Field Update

Today, on 02 October 2018, a Palestinian civilian succumbed to wounds he sustained after being shot with a live bullet to the head yesterday during a dispute with another person in Balata refugee camp, east of Nablus. In the same incident, 2 civilians, including a child, were wounded. This incident is part of the state of proliferation of weapons and assault on the rule of law in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).

According to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR), at approximately 15:10 on Monday, 01 October 2018, a dispute occurred between 2 civilians on al-Quds Street in Balata refugee camp, east of Nablus. The dispute between the 2 persons developed into one of them using a firearm to shoot the other, who was identified as Sabri Ramadan Sabri Abu Mustafa (20). Sabri was directly hit with a bullet to the head and was then transferred to the hospital in a critical health condition. Today morning, medical services announced Sabri’s death. Moreover, 2 more civilians, including a child, were wounded. They were identified as Suleiman Nader Abu ‘Asab (27), who sustained bullet shrapnel to the right eye, and Bilal Ahmed Methqal Abu Mustafa (17), was hit with a live bullet to the right leg. The wounded civilians were all taken to Rafidiya Governmental Hospital in the city to receive medical treatment.

The Palestinian Security Services arrived at al-Quds Street and took control of the dispute while the shooter surrendered to them.

PCHR hereby condemns the killing and injury of civilians due to opening fire at them. PCHR also calls upon the competent authorities to take all necessary measures to end the proliferation of weapons and maintain civilians’ security and safety.
