Field
Update

On Monday evening, 17 March 2014, Aladdin al-Awawda, from al-Bureij
refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip, was killed by several bullets in a
familial dispute. Additionally, a member of the same family was injured in the
same incident as he was attacked by a sharp tool. This incident is part of the
state of proliferation of weapons and assaults on the rule of law plaguing the
occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).

According to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Centre for
Human Rights (PCHR) and a statement of an eyewitness, at approximately 18:30 on
Monday, 17 March 2014, Aladdin Mohammed al-Awawda (54), from al-Bureij refugee
camp, was admitted to al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah in the central
Gaza Strip, as he sustained bullet wounds to the abdomen and chest. Medical
efforts to save his life failed due the seriousness of his wounds. The
aforementioned person had intervened to resolve a family dispute on a plot
between his cousins. The dispute developed into using firearms and sharp tools,
due to which al-Awawda sustained several bullet wounds. Moreover, his cousin,
Tareq Ali al-Awawda, sustained a serious wound by a sharp tool in the same
incident. He was taken to Shifa Hospital to receive necessary medical
treatment.

The police arrived at the scene, initiated an investigation and
arrested a number of the family members pending investigation.

PCHR strongly condemns the killing of al-Awaeda due to the use of
firearms in familial disputes, which is part of the state of proliferation of
weapons and assaults on the rule of law in the oPt. PCHR calls upon the
Attorney General to seriously investigate this incident and bring the
perpetrators before justice.
