Child and Other Person Injured in Two Separate Incidents in Khan Yunis and Gaza

Field
Update

Today morning, Wesam Hamdan was seriously injured due to the
explosion of a suspicious object in Khan Yunis townin the Southern Gaza Strip,
while another person was injured in a separate explosion in Gaza City yesterday
night. These two incidents are part of
the state of security chaos and misuse of weapons prevailing in the Occupied
Palestinian Territory.

According to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Center for
Human Rights (PCHR), at approximately 08:30 on Sunday, 26 June 2011, Wesam
Medhat Hamdan, 3, from the western refugee camp in Khan Yunis, south of the
Gaza Strip, was injured by shrapnel to the abdomen and the legs due to the explosion
of a suspicious object near his house. Hamdan was immediately transported to Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis to
receive the necessary medical treatment. Medical sources described his injury as serious and he was entered into
the intensive care unit.  The police
arrived to the area and examined the object’s shrapnel scattered in the
area. PCHR was informed that the police
had initiated an investigation into the incident.

In a separate incident, a heavy explosion
rocked western Gaza City at approximately 23:30 on Saturday, 25 June 2011. The explosion resulted from an explosive
device that was detonated by unknown persons near the southwestern wall of the
United Nations Special Coordinator Office for the Middle East Peace Process
(UNSCO), which is located in the United Nations Street, west of Anssar Security
Complex. As a result, one person was
wounded,[1]
while he was in Zaid Bin Haritha Mosque. He was then transported to Shifa Hospital in Gaza City to receive
necessary medical treatment. The
explosion also resulted in destroying part of the Office’s wall, in addition to
smashing the glass of the mosque and three neighboring houses. According to information collected by PCHR,
the police arrived at the area and initiated an investigation into the incident.

It should be noted that at approximately 24:00
on Sunday, 19 June 2011, a similar incident took place in the same area. However, no injuries or damages were reported
then.[2]

PCHR is gravely concerned over increasing
casualties resulting from the misuse of weapons, which is part of the state of
security chaos and violations of the rule of law. PCHR calls upon the Attorney
General to investigate these incidents and prosecute the perpetrators.
