Bomb Detonated in Beit Lahia Candy Store

Field Update

On Saturday morning, 22 May 2010, a bomb was detonated in
al-Qadhi candy shop in the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Lahia. The shop was entirely destroyed, but no
casualties were reported.

According to investigations conducted by the Palestinian
Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), at approximately 02:25 on Saturday, 22 May
2010, unknown persons detonated a bomb in front of al-Qadhi candy shop near
Kamal ‘Edwan Hospital in Beit Lahia. As
a result, the shop was entirely destroyed. The shop is owned by Bahaa’ al-Ghazali and is rented by Mohammed Salem
Radwan. Radwan stated to PCHR that he
was woken up when the explosion occurred, as he lives above the targeted
shop. He had heard noises in the street
before the blast. He added that the
strength of the blast doubled due to the explosion of a gas cylinder inside the
shop. Civil defence crews arrived in the
area and extinguished fire, and the police have initiated an
investigation.

PCHR strongly condemns this attack, which constitutes part
of the state of security chaos in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. PCHR further calls upon the
Attorney-General’s office to investigate the incident and bring the
perpetrators to justice.
