Field Update
On
Tuesday morning, 01 July 2014, 6 persons were injured as a result of the use of
firearms in a family dispute in al-Shuja’iya neighborhood in the east of Gaza
City. This incident is part of the
phenomenon of misuse of weapons and violations of the rule of law prevailing in
the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).
According
to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR),
at approximately 22:30 on Tuesday, 01 July 2014, a family dispute erupted
between members of the Mahani family and those of another family in Baghdad
Street in al-Shuaja’iya neighborhood in the east of Gaza City, where both
families live. The dispute developed
into the use of firearms. As a result, 6
members of the Mahani family were slightly injured:
1. Khaled
Ibrahim Mahani, 48;
2. Mohammed
Ibrahim Mahani, 51;
3. Ibrahim
Radwan Mahani, 31;
4. Ussama
Mohammed Mahani, 25;
5. Bilal
Mousa Mahani, 22; and
6. Mohammed
Ussama Mahani, 23.
The
Palestinian police spokesman, Ayoub Avu Sha’ar, stated to PCHR that the police
arrived at the scene, opened an investigation and arrested a number of
suspects.
PCHR
strongly condemns the use of fire arms in family and personal disputes, which
is part of the phenomenon of misuse of weapons and violations of the rule of
law prevailing in the oPt. PCHR calls
upon the Attorney General to seriously investigate this incident and bring those
who used the firearms before justice.
