On Thursday, a Palestinian male succumbed to his wounds after he sustained a live bullet wound in his head due to weapon mishandling two weeks ago in Jenin, northern West Bank. This incident is part of the state of recklessness and irresponsible use of weapons in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt), which endangers the lives of citizens and threatens their right to life.
According to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) at approximately 12:30 on Thursday, 21 January 2021, medical sources at Dr.Khalil Suliman Hospital in Jenin announced that Bashar Mahmoud ‘Alawna (20) succumbed to wounds he sustained on Tuesday, 05 January 2021, while playing with a weapon in Jenin, north of the West Bank. ‘Alawna was shot and injured with a live bullet in his head and was admitted to the operation room at Dr Suliman hospital, his state was classified as extremely critical.
Lieutenant Colonel Louay Zreiqat, Spokesperson of the Palestinian police, said that the police opened an investigation into the circumstances of ‘Alawna’s injury with a live bullet in Jenin.
‘Alawna is the first victim of weapons mishandling in 2021 in the oPt, noting that since the beginning of this year 5 citizens were killed in family disputes, including 4 killed in a single dispute.
PCHR expresses its grave concern to the continued loss of lives due to weapons misuse or mishandling. PCHR calls upon competent authorities to take the necessary measure to protect citizens from the dangers of arms.
