Young Woman Killed in Gaza City by Mishandled Weapon

On Sunday, 24 January 2016, a young woman was killed in her house in Gaza City when she mishandled a weapon and a bullet was accidently unleashed.
According to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), at approximately 16:00 on Sunday, 24 January 2016, D. R. ‘A (18), a high school student, arrived as dead body at al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City as she sustained a bullet wound.

According to the victim’s mother, who was sitting in her bedroom with her children in their house located in Nile Building behind the Islamic University, west of Gaza City, the mother heard something hitting the floor. They then went out to find her daughter lying in front of her bedroom and covered in blood. They found a Kalashnikov and her cell phone beside D. R. ‘A. Her brothers took her to al-Shifa Hospital, where her death was announced. According to the Forensic Department, D. ‘A died after being hit with a bullet that entered the chest and exited the back.
The Palestinian police said that D. ‘A died due to mishandling her father’s weapon as a bullet was mistakenly unleashed towards her.
PCHR calls upon the Attorney General to investigate into the incident and also calls upon the competent authorities to take the necessary measures to protect civilians from the dangers of weapons.
