Field Update
On Tuesday, 30 July 2013, 3 persons were
injured by live bullet when firearms were used in a dispute in Deir al-Balah
town in the central Gaza Strip. This
incident is part of the phenomenon of misuse of weapons and violations of the
rule of the law in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).
According to investigations conducted by the
Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR), at approximately 11:45 on Tuesday,
30 July 2013, a quarrel erupted between members of the Abu Obaid family and
workers of al-Mentar Contractors, when water supplies were cut off and a sewage
hole were was damaged near a house belonging to Rajah Abu Obaid near Saladin
Street in Deir al-Balah. The quarrel
escalated and firearms were used. As a
result, 3 persons were injured:
1) Rajeh
Suleiman Abu Obaid, 39, injured by 3 bullets to the pelvis and the legs;
2) Mohammed
Nasser Abu Obaid, 20, injured by a bullet to the chest; and
3) Adham
Mahmoud ‘Aabed, 32, injured by a bullet to the left thigh.
The Palestinian police arrived at the scene,
opened an investigation and arrested a number of suspects.
PCHR condemns this incident, which is part of
the phenomenon of misuse of weapons and violations of the rule of the law in
the oPt, and calls upon the Attorney General’s office to seriously investigate
it and bring the perpetrators before justice.
