Update
On
Sunday, 17 March 2013, 3 people were injured when an explosive detonated in a
restaurant in Jabaliya region of the Gaza Strip. The people who planted the
explosive have not been identified yet. This incident reflects the situation of
proliferation of weapons and the violations of the rule of law in the occupied
Palestinian territory.
According
to investigations conducted by Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), at
approximately 20:50 hours on Sunday, 17 March 2013, an explosive device,
planted by unidentified persons, detonated in al-Ons Restaurant in the western
part of Jabaliya region in the north of Gaza Strip. The shrapnel from this explosion injured the owner of the restaurant and 2
other workers in the restaurant, including a child. Hussein Deeb Abu al-Qumsan (52) the owner of
the restaurant, said that at approximately 19:00 hours, he noticed suspicious
activities around the restaurant and informed the Palestinian police about it,
but the police did not come to the restaurant.
One hour later, Abu al-Qumsan called the Palestinian navy, which arrived
immediately and searched the area. The
Palestinian navy confirmed that there were no suspicious objects. About 15 minutes later after the members of
the navy left, a heavy explosion took place in the restaurant. As a result, 3 people were injured:
1. Hussein
Abu al-Qumsan was injured all over his body;
2. Rezeq
Ayman Nassar (18) was seriously injured in his left arm and sustained wounds
all over his body; and
3. Ibrahim
Fayez Ahmed (16) was injured all over his body.
The
Palestinian police and Internal Security Service arrived at the scene later and
opened an investigation.
PCHR
believes that this incident is an example of the state of proliferation of weapons and
violations of the rule of law in oPt and calls upon official bodies to take
serious steps to put an end to proliferation of weapons and protect civilians.
