On Monday, 26 June 2023, the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) concluded a training course on “Women’s Rights in International and Domestic Legislations” with the attendance of 26 university students and graduates. The 20-hour course was held over the course of 4 consecutive days from 20-26 June 2023 in Gaza City.

The training program tackled different topics: International Bill of Human Rights and its 3 components; the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW); International Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women; Gender-Based Violence (GBV), its forms, reasons and ways to address it; intervention mechanisms and legal protection for women who are victims of violence; monitoring and documenting human rights violations, especially women’s rights; women’s right to political participation; in addition to the Palestinian legislations and their role in protecting women.

The training course aims to disseminate and promote the concepts of human rights in general, and women’s right in particular, and to raise young men and women’s awareness of international and domestic laws regarding women’s rights in order to build their capacities for advocacy on women’s issues and empower them to advocate for women’s rights and combat violence against women and girls, as it is the most pervasive form of human rights abuses as well as activating youth’s role in promoting the values of justice and equality in society.

At the end of the course, PCHR held a closing ceremony where Mr. Abdul Halim Abu Samra, Head of the Training Unit at PCHR, underscored that PCHR, ever since its establishment, has worked on the dissemination and promotion of human rights among all sects of the Palestinian society and contributed to raising a generation that is empowered and aware of defending its fundamental rights and freedoms in order to build a democratic society based on the human rights approach. Abu Samra added that this training course enhances knowledge of human rights issues, especially women’s rights among university students, with the aim of raising their human rights awareness, to take their role as human rights defenders in the dissemination of human rights culture and concepts in general and women’s rights in particular among their peers and at colleges all the way to achieve respect for women’s rights and end violence against women.

Meanwhile, the female and male participants emphasized that the course introduced them to new and rich topics that have contributed to raising their awareness on human rights. They also commended the trainers’ efficiency and the diverse and interactive training methods used in the training sessions, stressing the importance of holding more training courses for the university students.

At the end of the course, all participants received certificates.
