PRESS RELEASE

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights Complains to the Palestinian Attorney General Regarding the Publication of Defamatory Articles

Ref: 66/99

Date: 29th June 1999

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) recently undertook legal action to counter the defamatory campaign against human rights organizations led by a number of Palestinian officials. On June 27 PCHR complained to the Palestinian Attorney General against Al-Nashrah Monthly Magazine and its editor-in-chief Khalil Zibin as well as against Al-Hayat Al-Jadida and its editor-in-chief Hafez Barghouthi and its Gaza correspondent Muneer Abu Riziq. PCHR’s complaint to the Attorney General came after both Al-Nashrah and Al-Hayat Al-Jadida published false information against PCHR and its board members.

PCHR believes that the false information is part of the campaign led by a group of Palestinian officials, including Minister of Justice Freih Abu Meddein, against Palestinian civil society and the Palestinian human rights community. The publication of false information and the issuing of accusations without evidence are illegal under Palestinian law. PCHR urged the Palestinian Attorney General to investigate the false accusations against PCHR and its board members.
