PRESS RELEASE

Ref.,: 57/99

Date: 16th May, 1999

Yesterday, May 15, 1999, The Hague Appeal for Peace Conference ended. Almost 8,000 participants representing more than 1,000 international and non-governmental organizations attended the conference. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Queen Noor of Jordan, and many other keynote speakers addressed the participants in the closing ceremonies.

The conference provided a terrific opportunity for the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) to address the question of the Fourth Geneva Convention and to lobby for holding the conference of the High Contracting Parties to the Convention regarding its implementation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Issam Younis, PCHR delegate to the conference, made a presentation on the Fourth Geneva Convention and also discussed the human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Younis also met with representatives of many Arab and international organizations. These individuals and organizations voiced their commitment to join PCHR’s campaign to urge the High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention to take the appropriate and necessary measures at the upcoming conference on July 15, 1999.
