On Thursday, 20 July 2017, the Palestinian Center for human Rights (PCHR) and Community Media Center (CMC) concluded a training course in the field of child rights and human rights for media graduates in the Gaza Strip. The 15-hour course that lasted for 4 days was held in the CMC office in Gaza from 17 to 20 July 2017, and attended by 20 participants, including 13 women.
The training course program covered the following topics: introduction to human rights, International Bill of Human Rights (the International Declaration of Human Rights, the International Convent on Civil and Political Rights and the International Convent on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights), Convention on the Rights of the Child, Protocols I and II additional to the Geneva Conventions, mechanisms for applying the convention, and mechanisms for monitoring and documenting child rights violations.
A team of specialized trainers supervised the training sessions. The team included Mohammed ‘Atallah, a trainer at PCHR’s Training Unit; and Bassam al-Aqraa’, Director of PCHR’s Training Unit.
At the end of the course, PCHR organized a closing ceremony. Mr. Bassam al-Aqraa’, Director of the Training Unit, stressed that this training is part of PCHR’s long-term efforts to promote the culture of human rights in the Palestinian society. He added that the relation between PCHR and the participants will not end at the end of the course, and should be strengthened afterwards. He also said that PCHR’s doors will always be open to participants in order to benefit from PCHR’s experience regarding what they have learnt.
Moreover, the participants highlighted that PCHR should continue holding similar courses to reach other categories in the society for the importance of the subject and PCHR’s experience, accreditation and good reputation in the field of human rights. Sa’diyah Husain, a participant in the course, said that “The course was characterized with its rich topics and contributed to raising the participants’ awareness of human rights. She also praised the trainers’ efficiency and their various and interactive training procedures which were used in the course.
