The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) is an independent Palestinian human rights organization established in 1995 based in Gaza Strip. PCHR works through the law and advocacy for the promotion and protection of human rights, the pursuance of the rule of law and the realization of democratic principles for the Palestinian people. PCHR announces the following vacancy.

Position title: Translator/Interpreter

Location: Online

Contract duration: Six months (with possible extension). 

Brief description of the position

PCHR seeks a translator/interpreter to provide accurate translation and simultaneous interpretation, as needed, from English to Arabic and vice versa, using the most appropriate vocabulary and commonly accepted equivalents of professional, technical, or legal terms, as well as high standards of accuracy, consistency, and faithfulness to the spirit, style, and nuances of the original text. 

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Translating PCHR’s documents and/or website content from Arabic to English and English to Arabic; including but not limited to victims’ testimonies and stories, publications, reports, and other materials and making sure there are no omissions from the source.
  • Perform verbal translation from Arabic to English (and vice versa) during, meetings, networking activities, trainings, and other type of communications when needed.
  • Ensure that the translated text is linguistically and grammatically correct and error free.
  • Maintain confidentiality and neutrality of materials translated cannot be submitted, distributed to, or used by any other party and share them only with PCHR.
  • The translator/Interpreter is obligated to work within the required deadlines and be available for comments and corrections.

Education and Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree (a master’s degree is preferred) in English literature, translation, or a related field of study.
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience working as a translator or interpreter.
  • Expertise in translating legal documents is considered as a further advantage. 
  •  Proven track record of working with local and international non-governmental organizations.
  • Ability to perform translation tasks with minimal supervision.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Flexibility and ability to work under pressure and have good team skills. 
  • Manage work schedule to meet deadlines.
  • Highly approachable, trustworthy, and confidential.
  • Good knowledge of human rights and international law.
  • Very good computer skills (word required, excel desirable).
