At dawn today, IOF killed 2 Palestinians, including one civilian, and injured 2 others during an incursion into Jenin refugee camp, northern West Bank.
According to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), at around 01:00 on Tuesday, 01 March 2022, an Israeli special force from “Yamam Unit” sneaked into Jenin refugee camp, western Jenin, via 2 white Mercedes buses. The force raided ‘Emad al-Deen Jamal ‘Abdel Salam Abu al-Hayjaa’s (23) house and arrested him; afterwards, IOF withdrew towards the northern camp entrance. Meanwhile, Palestinians discovered the infiltrating Israeli force, and an exchange of fire occurred between the force and members of Palestinian armed groups. As a result, an armed group member was killed, he was identified as ‘Abullah Ahmed Thiab al-Hosari (23), who is also a member of Islamic Jihad’s military wing “al-Quds Brigades,” after IOF shot him with a bullet in the chest. Afterwards, IOF sent military backups to Jenin northern entrance and near Ibn Sina Hospital to support the special force. Palestinians gathered and threw stones at IOF’s vehicles while IOF directly opened fire at the protesters. As a result, 3 protesters were wounded: one sustained critical injury in the head, another was shot in the abdomen and the third was shot in his foot. All of the wounded were taken to Dr. Khalil Soliman Governmental Hospital. The first wounded person, who was later identified as Shadi Khaled ‘Ali Nejem (18), from the Camp, was referred to Ibn Sina Hospital due to his serious condition. He underwent a surgery, where it turned out that his injury caused him a skull fracture and he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. At around 06:00, the medical crew announced his death due to his serious injury.
So far in 2022, IOF have killed 10 Palestinian civilians, including 2 children, and wounded tens of others, including women and children. All of them were residents of the West Bank.
PCHR reiterates its call upon the international community to take immediate action to end Israeli occupation’s crimes, and its call upon the High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention to fulfil their obligations as per Common Article 1 of the Convention, “undertake to respect and to ensure respect for the present Convention in all circumstances.” PCHR also calls upon the High Contracting Parties to uphold their commitment to Article 146 of the same Conventions, i.e., to hold accountable persons accused of committing grave breaches of the Convention, and to ensure protection for Palestinian civilians in the occupied territory.
