The Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) received with great sorrow the news of the death of Dr. Amin Mekki Medani in Khartoum City. Dr. Mekki is a lawyer, a professor of law and a human rights activist. In his death, the Arab human rights movement lost one of its most prominent lawyers. Mekki played a role in defending human rights in Sudan and the Arab world. He was the best representative of Arab human rights cases in all UN positions that he occupied. During the period from 1997 to 2001, Dr. Mekki was Chief Technical Advisor and Head of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and headed the OHCHR in the occupied Palestinian terretory (oPt) where he worked with great devotion to Palestinian human rights. Mekki was very close to the Palestinian human rights movement. He was so tender in which he was never reluctant to offer his experience for Palestine.
“The loss of Amin Mekki Medani is a great loss to Sudan, to human rights movement and to Arab civil society. He was prosecuted, exiled, arrested and sentenced to death as a price for his struggle, but that did not discourage him from his principles and commitment. For him, Palestine was morally and legally on top of cases as he gave all his experiences and knowledge for it. He was and will remain a form of inspiration and a role model for all human rights activists.” said Raji Sourani, Director of PCHR.
PCHR’s Director and staff members extend their deepest condolences and sympathy to Mekki’s wife. Our suffering and pain are the same. The memory and works of Dr. Mekki Medani will be immortal in the hearts of all defenders of human rights, justice and human dignity as we derive hope from tehm for a better future for Palestine and the Arab world.
