PRESS RELEASE
Child prisoner Yasser Allan Wahidi is released after 53 days of detention
Ref.,: 8/99
Date: 25th January, 1999
On January 17, 1999 the Palestinian Preventive Security Branch released the child Wahidi. Wahidi, 14 years old and living in Jabaliya Refugee Camp was released after 53 days of detention. On January 14, PCHR issued a press release which stated that Wahidi’s detention of November 23, 1998 was in violation of the provisions of Palestinian law as well as relevant international human rights instruments. PCHR demanded his immediate release as he was being held with adult detainees.
Previously, PCHR asked the Attorney General for the immediate release of the child Wahidi as he was being held in violation of Palestinian laws that should be respected.
On different occasions PCHR re-affirmed the need to abide by the provisions of the law and called for the immediate release of all prisoners in PA prisons who are being held without charge or otherwise are being illegally detained.
PCHR expresses its satisfaction with the release of the child, but at the same time calls on the PA to require law enforcement officials to follow relevant provisions of Palestinian law.
