Summary
Serious Israeli
violations of international law continued in the Occupied Palestinian Territory
(OPT) during the reporting period (16 – 22 June 2005):
Willful Killing and Injury
to Palestinian Civilians: Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) shot dead a Palestinian civilian and
injured a child who accompanied him as the two were hunting birds near the
border between the Gaza Strip and Israel to the east of Gaza Valley
village. IOF left the victim bleeding to
death. During the reported period, two
Palestinian civilians were wounded by the Israeli gunfire in the Gaza Strip. In a serious escalation, the Israeli Minister
of Internal Security declared that IOF would resume the policy of
extra-judicial assassinations against Palestinian resistance activists. Israeli drones fired missiles at Palestinian
resistance activists in the Gaza Strip, but no casualties were reported. In the West Bank, a Palestinian civilian was
injured when IOF fired at his car in Hebron.
Incursions:
IOF conducted 50
military incursions into Palestinian areas (46 in the West Bank and 4 in the
Gaza Strip). During these incursions, especially
on Tuesday, 21 June 2005, IOF raided houses and arrested 74 Palestinian
civilians, including five children. IOF
also seized 11 houses and transformed them into military sites.
Restrictions
on Movement: IOF
have continued to impose a tightened siege on the OPT, including
Jerusalem. On Friday, 17 June 2005, IOF closed Rafah International
Crossing Point on the Egyptian border. The crossing point was reopened on the following day, but under severe
restrictions. As a result, the crossing
point witnessed congestion at both sides and many travelers were forced to
sleep at the Egyptian side. IOF also
closed Beit Hanoun (Erez) crossing and the industrial zone in the northern Gaza
Strip for a few days, preventing workers and patients from entering
Israel. In the West Bank, IOF imposed
severe restrictions on the movement of Palestinian civilians. They prevented Palestinian civilians who are
under 45 from reaching al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem for the Friday Prayer. An old Palestinian woman died from a
heart attack as Israeli soldiers
positioned at a checkpoint obstructed her travel from Bethlehem to East
Jerusalem for the Friday Prayer. IOF
positioned at checkpoints arrested 11 Palestinian civilians in the OPT,
including a girl in the Gaza Strip.
Annexation
Wall: IOF have
continued to construct the Annexation Wall inside the West Bank territory. For this purpose, they razed more areas of
Palestinian land, especially in Yatta village, southwest of Hebon, and the
villages of Marda and al-Zawia, southwest of Nablus. In addition, IOF used
force to disperse peaceful demonstrations organized by Palestinian civilians
and international and Israeli solidarity activists in protest to the
construction of the Wall. A number of
demonstrators were injured. 12 others, including 10 Israeli and international
solidarity activists, were arrested. During the reported period, IOF informed two civilians in the villages
of Sikka and Deir al-‘Asal that their houses would be demolished, claiming that
they were built without licenses. IOF
also confiscated more areas of Palestinian land in Far’oun village, south of
Tulkarm.
Illegal Settler Activities: Israeli settlers in breach of
international humanitarian law continue to reside in the OPT and have launched
a series of attacks against Palestinian civilians and property, especially in
Hebron. In the Gaza Strip, a number of
armed Israeli settlers attacked a number of Palestinian civilians in al-Mawasi
area in Khan Yunis, and wounded one of them with a live bullet. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers seized
three stores, uprooted 33 olive trees and damaged one ton of plums in
Hebron.
