Weekly Report on Israeli Human Rights Violations in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (10 October 2001)

Introduction

 

This
report covers human rights violations perpetrated by Israeli occupation forces
in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) during the period October 4-10,
2001. According to PCHR’s documentation,
this week, Israeli occupation forces fired at Palestinian civilians who
organized peaceful protests, without any threat having been posed to the lives
of Israeli soldiers. On some occasions,
the Israeli forces fired at Palestinian civilians during periods when no
demonstrations or other clashes were occurring. Furthermore, the Israeli forces shelled Palestinian residential areas
and encroached into Palestinian controlled areas, leveling large areas of
agricultural land and destroying many agricultural and civilian
facilities. This week, the Israeli
forces killed 14 Palestinians – including 12 civilians. Around 60 Palestinians were injured.

 

According to PCHR’s documentation, three Palestinian
civilians were shot dead and 29, mostly children, were injured either as a
result of entirely unprovoked attacks or as a result of excessive use of force
during demonstrations in which no threat was posed to the lives of Israeli
soldiers.

 

On Sunday, October 7, 2001, Ra’ed Bhjat El-Sharif, 28, a
taxi driver from Hebron, was killed and four other Palestinian civilians,
including a woman and her child, were wounded, when Israeli occupation soldier
fired at their car.

 

On Monday, October 8, 2001, Israeli occupation soldiers,
positioned in a military location at Al-Shuhada’ junction, south of Gaza City,
shot dead a Palestinian civilian, ‘Abdel-Rahman Ahmed Abu ‘Oreiban, who
suffered from psychological disturbances. The incident was the second of its kind in 10 days.[1]

 

On Wednesday, October 10, 2001, Hamada Saleh Abu El-Rous,
34, from Rafah, was pronounced dead from a wound he received by Israeli
occupation forces approximately 14 years ago. Abu El-Rous was wounded by a live bullet in the head during clashes in
Rafah refugee camp on December 12, 1987. Since then, he suffered from hemiplegia. He was pronounced dead on Wednesday.

 

Furthermore, 11 Palestinians, including 9 civilians, were
killed and 34 were injured by live bullets and shrapnel from artillery shells
during the shelling of, and encroachments into Palestinian cities and villages
by the Israeli occupation forces. This
week, Hebron witnessed particularly violent shelling and incursion.

 

On Thursday, October 4, 2001, Israeli occupation forces
shelled Palestinian residential areas in Hebron killing Mohammed ‘Emad Shehdeh Sharbasi, 28, from
Khan Yunis and resident of Hebron.

 

On Friday, October 5, 2001, Israeli occupation forces,
reinforced with tanks and military vehicles, moved into Palestinian controlled
areas in Hebron, under the cover of intensive shelling by tanks and combat
helicopters. Two gunmen were and three
Palestinian civilians were killed during the incursion. In addition, 14 Palestinian civilians were
injured.

 

On Saturday, October 6, 2001, the
Israeli occupation forces expanded their military activities against
Palestinians in Hebron, killing two civilians.

 

On Monday, October 8, 2001, Israeli occupation
soldiers, positioned at the eastern border of the Gaza Strip, east of Gaza City
killed three Palestinian civilians.

 

Since Tuesday morning, October 9,
2001, the Israeli forces have swept large areas of agricultural land and have
destroyed many civilian and agricultural facilities. 

 

The Israeli occupation forces
have continued their incursion into Palestinian agricultural land in the north
of Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip. The incursion started on Wednesday morning, October 3, 2001, and has
continued until today. Israeli forces,
reinforced with tanks and bulldozers, have swept 1,300 dunums of agricultural
land and have destroyed many civilian facilities in the north of Beit Lahia. For one week, around 35 Palestinian families,
living east of “Dogit” settlement, north of Beit Lahia, have been living
without electricity and with restricted water.
