Weekly Report on Israeli Human Rights Violations in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (03 October 2001)

Introduction

 

This report covers human rights violations by Israeli occupation forces
in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) from September 27 – October 3,
2001. This week, Israeli soldiers killed
22 Palestinians – 16 of whom were civilians (including six children) and four
security officers. Around 300
Palestinians were also injured. In
addition, four Palestinians were killed in two mysterious explosions, which the
Israeli occupation forces are suspected to be involved in. Two Palestinian militants were also killed in
an attack on a Jewish settlement in the northern Gaza Strip.

 

According to PCHR’s documentation, seven Palestinian
civilians, including four children, and a security man, were killed and 230,
mostly children, were injured either as a result of being fired at for no
apparent reason or due the excessive use of force against demonstrators when no
threat was posed to the lives of Israeli soldiers.

 

On Thursday evening, September 27, 2001, ‘Ali Salem
Abu Ballima, 30, from Deir El-Balah, who suffered from psychological
disturbances, was killed with a live bullet in the pelvis fired by Israeli
occupation soldiers, while he was passing near “Kfar Darom” settlement, east of
Deir El-Balah.

 

On Friday afternoon, September 28, 2001, 15-year-old
Mahmoud ‘Ali Sukkar, from Al-Duheisha refugee camp in Bethlehem, was killed by
an Israeli sniper with a live bullet in the chest, while he was participating
in a peaceful march at the western entrance of Al-Khader village.

 

On Saturday morning, September 29, 2001, Muhsen Fahed
‘Arar, 17, from Qarawat Bani Zeid, was pronounced dead at Ramallah Hospital
from a previous wounded he received by Israeli occupation soldiers more than a
week ago. ‘Arar was then wounded by two
live bullets in the neck and the right hand when Israeli occupation soldiers
fired at Palestinian civilians who were demonstrating at the northern entrance
of Al-Bireh on September 21, 2001.

 

Also on Saturday morning, an 18-year-old Palestinian
civilian, Khalil Yousef Ibrahim Fayadh, from Deir El-Balah, was killed by
Israeli occupation forces with a live bullet in the head during clashes near
“Kfar Darom” settlement , east of Deir El-Balah.

 

On Saturday afternoon, a 13-year-old Palestinian
civilian, Mahmoud Khamis Husni El-Sawaf, from Al-Tuffah neighborhood in Gaza
City, was killed by Israeli occupation soldiers with a live bullet in the
chest. According to eyewitnesses,
El-Sawaf was sitting on the back of an ambulance, approximately 150m away from
the Israeli forces. He did not
participate in clashes when he was shot by an Israeli sniper from a gun
equipped with a silencer.

 

On Sunday morning, September 30, 2001, Israeli
occupation soldiers at Taybeh roadblock, west of Tulkarm, opened fire on two
Palestinian civilian cars. Two
Palestinian laborers, who traveled in the cars, were killed as follows:

1) Khalil ‘Abdel-Halim Nasser El-Sarafandi, 52, from
‘Askar refugee camp, in Nablus, killed by a live bullet in the head; and

2) Husni Mustafa Abu Leil, 19, from Balata refugee camp
in Nablus, killed by four live bullets in the shoulder, the chest and the left
thigh and hand.

 

Also on Sunday, Nidhal Mohammed Subhi El-Fakhouri,
28, a first lieutenant of the Palestinian Preventive Security Service, was
killed by two explosive bullets in the head and the right shoulder, fired by
Israeli occupation soldiers, while he was moving Palestinian demonstrators away
from demarcation lines in Hebron.

 

Furthermore, 12 Palestinian civilians, including two
children, and four security men were killed and 77, mostly civilians, were
injured by live bullets and shrapnel from artillery shells during shelling of,
and encroachments into Palestinian cities and villages by the Israeli
occupation forces.

 

On Wednesday morning, September 3, 2001, in a
disproportionate retaliation in response to an attack on “Elli Sinai”
settlement in Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip by two Palestinian gunmen,
Israeli occupation forces killed six Palestinians, two farmers and four
security men, and injured four. Israeli
occupation forces moved into areas under full control of the Palestinian
National Authority, north of Beit Lahia, under the cover of intensive
shelling. An artillery shell fell onto a
Palestinian farm in Al-Sayafa area, north of Beit Lahia, 700m south of “Elli
Sinai” settlement. The owner of the
farm, Maher Edris Ahmed Khudeir, 23, and a farmer, Mahmoud Mohammed El-Shurafa,
25, both from Beit Lahia, were killed. The Israeli forces also shelled eight Palestinian security sites,
adjacent to Jewish settlements. Three
Palestinian security men were killed as follows:

1) Nour El-Din Mohammed Salim Qweider, 24, from Al-Daraj
neighborhood in Gaza City, killed by shrapnel from an artillery shell in the
upper part of the body;

2) Mahmoud Ibrahim Hussein Abu Hani, 19, from Al-Shati
refugee camp, killed by shrapnel from an artillery shell throughout the body;
and

3) Wa’el Fu’ad ‘Awwad, 25, from Deir El-Balah, killed by
shrapnel from an artillery shell throughout the body.

 

Moreover, the Israeli forces fired at Sayed Salim
Mahmoud Ziara, 32, from Al-Tuffah neighborhood in Gaza City, a member of the
Palestinian National Security Forces, killing him with a live bullet in the
head.

 

On Thursday morning, September 27, 2001, Israeli
occupation forces, positioned at the Egyptian border, south of Rafah, resumed shelling
of Palestinian houses in Rafah. This
escalation came after an incursion into the city. The shelling and incursion, which lasted from
the previous day up to 04:00 local time resulted in the deaths of three
Palestinians and the injury of 16, three of whom were in critical
condition. Those killed were:

1) Khaled Mahmoud Mohammed
Abu Habib, 25, his body destroyed by an artillery shell that hit his head;

2) Akram ‘Abdel-Majid Abu
Lebdeh, 27, received shrapnel from an artillery shell in the eyes and the left
leg; and

3) Mahmoud Fathi Hamdan
El-Sha’er, 24, received an artillery shell in the head the destroyed his body.

 

The gunfire continued
sporadically up to 19:30 local time, and live bullets hit areas approximately
2km away from Salah El-Din Gate at the Egyptian border. At approximately 17:00 local time, a
14-year-old Palestinian civilian, Ma’awia ‘Ali Ahmed El-Nahhal, was killed by a
live bullet in the chest, while he was at ‘Omar Ben Al-Khattab Street,
approximately 600m away from the border.

 

On Friday, September 28,
2001, Israeli occupation forces shelled Palestinian residential areas in
Hebron The shelling coincided with the
end of the Friday prayer as thousands of prayers were getting out of mosques. Emam Mohammed Rashad El-Sharif, 25, who had
gone out of a mosque in Al-Sheikh neighborhood, was killed by a heavy caliber
bullet in the head.

 

Approximately an hour
later, 10-year-old Mohammed Yousef El-Tarayra, from Bani Na’im village,
northeast of Hebron, was killed by a heavy caliber bullet in the pelvis, when
Israeli occupation forces opened fire from heavy machine guns at Palestinians
at the entrance of the village.

 

On Saturday morning,
September 29, 2001, Ahmed Mohammed ‘Awaja, 25, from Rafah, was pronounced dead
at Shifa’ Hospital in Gaza City from a previous wound he received in the head
by a heavy caliber bullet fired by Israeli occupation forces.

 

On the same day, Israeli
occupation forces shelled Palestinian houses and shops in the center of
Hebron. Rebhi Mahmoud Ahmed El-Bayedh,
51, was killed by a heavy caliber bullet in the heart while he was inside his
shop in Wadi Al-Tuffah Street in the center of the city.

 



1. Shooting at Palestinian
Civilians

 

Thursday,
September 27, 2001

 

In the evening, Israeli occupation soldiers,
positioned in the vicinity of “Kfar Darom” settlement, east of Deir El-Balah,
shot dead a Palestinian civilian who suffered from psychological
disturbances. According to PCHR’s
investigations, at approximately 19:30, ‘Ali Salem Abu Ballima, 30, from Deir
El-Balah, was passing near an Israeli military location in the east of “Kfar
Darom” settlement. He did not follow
orders by Israeli soldiers to stop since he had psychological problems. Soon, Israeli soldiers fired at him, without
having resorted to any less lethal means, although he was not carrying any
weapons or suspicious objects. He
received a live bullet in the pelvis. He
was evacuated to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir El-Balah, and from there he
was transferred to Shifa’ Hospital in Gaza City where he soon died.

 

Friday,
September 28, 2001

 

In the afternoon, Israeli occupation soldiers fired
at dozens of Palestinian young men and children from the middle area of the
Gaza Strip, who were demonstrating near Al-Shuhada’ junction south of Gaza
City. Seven demonstrators were wounded
as follows:

1) ‘Eissa Khalil ‘Eissa, 14, from Nusseirat refugee
camp, wounded by a live bullet in the buttocks;

2) Mohammed Jamil ‘Afaneh, 14, from Nusseirat refugee
camp, wounded by a live bullet in the abdomen;

3) Mohammed Ahmed Noufal, 16, from Nusseirat refugee
camp, wounded by a live bullet in the left side;

4) Jaber Mohammed Nashbat, 16, from Al-Boreij refugee
camp, wounded by a live bullet in the head;

5) Mohammed El-Louh, 17, from Nusseirat refugee camp,
wounded by a live bullet in the head;

6) Mohammed Jamal El-‘Arian, 17, from Al-Boreij refugee
camp, wounded by a live bullet in the left shoulder; and

7) Mohammed Mohammed El-‘Refa’ei, 18, from Al-Boreij
refugee camp, wounded by a live bullet in the chest.

 

In additions, dozens of demonstrators suffered from
tear gas inhalation.

 

In Khan Yunis, more than 1,000 Palestinian civilians
participated in a march after the Friday prayer that moved from the big mosque
in the center of the city towards Al-Shaf’ei mosque in Khan Yunis refugee camp,
near Al-Tuffah military roadblock separating the city from its Al-Mawasi
area. PCHR’s field officer in Khan Yunis
reported that dozens of demonstrators threw stones towards Israeli occupation
soldiers from more than 100m away. Israeli occupation soldiers fired at the demonstrators. Later, the clashes extended to other areas as
Palestinian demonstrators threw stones towards Israeli military locations in
the vicinity of “Gani Tal” settlement, opposite to Al-Amal neighborhood. Israeli soldiers fired live ammunition,
rubber-coated metal bullets and tear gas canisters indiscriminately. In the clashes that continued up to 19:00
local time, 22 Palestinian civilians, mostly children, were wounded as follows:

1) Zuhair Khamis Zannoun, 4, wounded by shrapnel from a
live bullet in the right leg;

2) Mohammed ‘Aatef ‘Ammar, 14, wounded by two live
bullets in the legs;

3) Khamis Ahmed Saqer, 18, wounded by a live bullet in
the left foot;

4) Mu’men Hussein Abu Ghali, 12, wounded by a live
bullet in the right foot;

5) Tamer Jamal Muhareb, 18, wounded by a live bullet in
the right foot;

6) Khaled Hussein Jarghoun, 20, wounded by a live bullet
in the left thigh;

7) ‘Arafat Fu’ad Barbakh, 22, wounded by a live bullet
in the right thigh;

8) Mohammed Ahmed El-Daghmeh, 20, wounded by a
rubber-coated metal bullet in the head;

9) Ismail Fathi Jadallah, 13, wounded by a live bullet
in the head;

10) Akram Fadhel Barbakh, 13, wounded by a live bullet in
the right foot;

11) Ibrahim Na’im Abu Shaqra, 16, wounded by a live
bullet in the right hand;

12) Mohammed Sami Abu Sel, 16, wounded by a live bullet
in the right hand;

13) Qassem Nazhmi Hamdan, 12, wounded by a live bullet in
the left foot;

14) Hashem Salah El-Emam, 13, wounded by a live bullet in
the right foot;

15) Hussam Husni El-Tartouri, 13, wounded by a live
bullet in the right foot;

16) Eyad Hamed Barbakh, 12, wounded by a live bullet in
the left foot;

17) Mohammed Samir Shahwan, 13, wounded by a live bullet
in the right foot;

18) Mohammed ‘Abdel-‘Azziz Subeh, 14, wounded by a
rubber-coated metal bullet in the head;

19) Salameh ‘Abdel-Karim Abu El-S’oud, 12, wounded by a
live bullet in the right foot;

20) Ghassan Salem Zo’rob, 15, wounded by a live bullet in
the left thigh;

21) Mohammed Fu’ad Barbakh, 20, wounded by a live bullet
in the left foot;

22) Riadh Mohammed Saqer, 35, wounded by a live bullet in
the right foot.

 

In the afternoon, dozens of Palestinian civilians
demonstrated near “Kfar Darom” settlement, east of Deir El-Balah in the middle
area of the Gaza Strip. Israeli
occupation soldiers fired at the demonstrators, wounding three as follows:

1) Salim Mahmoud Radhi, 18, from Nusseirat refugee camp,
wounded by two live bullets in the left thigh and the abdomen;

2) ‘Alla’ Bader El-Yubali, 14, from Al-Maghazi refugee
camp, wounded by a live bullet in the right foot; and

3) Mahran Sa’id Musleh, 28, from Al-Maghazi refugee
camp, wounded by a live bullet in the right hand.

 

After the Friday prayer, Israeli occupation soldiers
fired live ammunition and rubber-coated metal bullets at dozens of Palestinian
civilians who were demonstrating near Al-Mentar Outlet. Forty Palestinian civilians were wounded as
follows:

1) Salah Tayseer Abu Sam’an, 24, from Al-Shati refugee
camp in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the neck;

2) Eshteiwi Jamal El-Ghefari, 15, from Al-Jala’
neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the left hand;

3) Mohammed ‘Arafat Abu Sidu, 16, from Al-Tuffah
neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the left leg;

4) Mus’ab Mohammed Abu El-‘Amrein, 17, from Sheikh
Radwan neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by two live bullets in the abdomen
and the chest;

5) Eyad Ahmed Jamila, 24, wounded by a live bullet in
the right leg;

6) Ashraf Saqer Habib, 18, from Al-Tuffah neighborhood
in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the left foot;

7) Ayman Walid El-‘Ackawi, 18, from Al-Shojaeya
neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the right leg;

8) Mohammed Nayef El-Khaldi, 18, from Al-Jala’
neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the right knee;

9) Mohammed Jamil Sukkar, 18, from Al-Shojaeya
neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by a rubber-coated metal bullet in the head;

10) ‘Alla’ Jaber Abu Foul, 18, from Sheikh Radwan
neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the right thigh;

11) Mhmoud Zakaria Abu Watfa, 17, from Jabalya, wounded
by a live bullet in the right thigh;

12) Rashad Mohammed Nasman, 19, from Al-Shati refugee
camp, wounded by a live bullet in the right thigh;

13) Kamel ‘Adnan El-Louh, 16, from Al-Daraj neighborhood
in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the right thigh;

14) Hussein Jamal El-Serhi, 15, from Al-Zaytoun
neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the left side;

15) Ahmed Tayseer ‘Obeid, 16, from Al-Shojaeya
neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the right thigh;

16) Mustafa Khalil El-‘Ar’eir, 15, from Al-Shojaeya
neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the neck;

17) Nasser Ramadan Marshoud, 13, from Tal Al-Hawa
neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the left leg;

18) Tariq Hatem Sa’d, 18, from Al-Shojaeya neighborhood
in Gaza City, wounded by two live bullets in the abdomen and the hand;

19) Ma’awia Khaled El-Ashram, 16, from Al-Daraj
neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the back;

20) Mahmoud Ahmed ‘Awadh, 17, from Sheikh Radwan
neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the right thigh;

21) Shehdeh Mohammed El-Sawarka, 16, from Sheikh Radwan

neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the left hand;

27) Ahmed Rajab El-Sarhoub, 16, from Gaza City, wounded
by a live bullet in the left leg;

28) ‘Ezziddin ‘Azziz Baker, 17, from Al-Shati refugee
camp in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the right knee;

29) Hussein Jamal El-Serhi, 17, from Al-Zaytoun
neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the chest;

30) Fawaz Fawzi El-Harazin, 17, from Al-Shojaeya neighborhood
in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the right knee;

31) Yahia Jaber Humeid, 16, from Al-Shojaeya neighborhood
in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the abdomen;

32) Rafaiq Khader Zaghra, 25, from Sheikh Radwan
neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the right thigh;

33) Ismail Mohammed Abu El-‘Atta, 19, from Al-Shojaeya
neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the left thigh;

34) Mohammed Ziad Kassab, 17, from Al-Daraj neighborhood
in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the right leg;

35) Mohammed ‘Abdel-Latif El-Barqawi, 28, from
Al-Shojaeya neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the left
leg;

36) Mousa Hussein El-Meithana, 20, from Al-Shojaeya
neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by two live bullets in the left thigh and
hand;

37) Taleb Sha’ban El-Bayoumi, 28, from Al-Shojaeya
neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the buttocks;

38) Mahmoud El-Refa’ei, 22, from Al-Shati refugee camp in
Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the left knee;

39) Bassam Ahmed Khalil, 25, from Al-Shojeaya
neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the left thigh; and

40) Khalil Ibrahim Ayoub, 23, from Al-Shojaeya
neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the right thigh.

 

After the Friday prayer, Israeli occupation soldiers
fired live ammunition, rubber-coated metal bullets and tear gas canisters at
Palestinian civilians who were demonstrating at the northern entrance of
Al-Bireh. Five demonstrators were
wounded as follows:

1) Sana’ Mousa Ahmed Qar’an, 16, from Ramallah, wounded
by shrapnel from a live bullet in the back;

2) Bassam Zaki, 37, from Ramallah, wounded by a live
bullet in the right thigh;

3) Dhib Zuhdi Salem Abu Shousha, 14, from Ramallah,
wounded by a rubber-coated metal bullet in the right side;

4) Zakaria Ya’qoub Jamil Zayed, 10, from Ramallah,
wounded by a rubber-coated metal bullet in the eye; and

5) Shadi Mahmoud El-Khawaja, 20, from Ramallah, wounded
by a rubber-coated metal bullet in the back.

 

At approximately 14:50 local time, 15-year-old
Mahmoud ‘Ali Sukkar, from Al-Duheisha refugee camp in Bethlehem, was killed by
an Israeli sniper with a live bullet in the chest, while he was participating
in a peaceful march at the western entrance of Al-Khader village. After the Friday prayer, hundreds of
Palestinian civilians had demonstrated near the western entrance of Al-Khader
village in Bethlehem. The demonstrators
threw stones towards an Israeli military location, while they were 150m
away. Israeli soldiers fired at the
demonstrators, killing Sukkar with a live bullet in the chest.

 

Saturday,
September 29, 2001

 

At approximately 06:00 local time, Israeli occupation
soldiers at Taybeh roadblock, west of Tulkarm, fired at a number of Palestinian
laborers who were trying to cross the Green Line towards their places of work
inside Israel. Radwan Hafezh
El-‘Abadleh, 19, from Al-Qarara, north of Khan Yunis, was wounded by a live
bullet in the right thigh. He was
evacuated to Tulkarm Hospital.

 

In the morning, Muhsen Fahed ‘Arar, 17, from Qarawat
Bani Zeid, was pronounced dead at Ramallah Hospital from a previous wound he
received by Israeli occupation soldiers more than a week ago. ‘Arar was wounded by two live bullets in the
neck and the right hand when Israeli occupation soldiers fired at Palestinian
civilians who were demonstrating at the northern entrance of Al-Bireh on
September 21, 2001. He remained in the
intensive care unit at Ramallah Hospital until he died. According to medical sources, a live bullet
penetrated the neck into the lungs, the diaphragm and the spleen.

 

Since the morning, dozens of Palestinian children and
young men had demonstrated near Al-Tuffah roadblock, west of Khan Yunis. Israeli occupation soldiers at the roadblock
fired at the demonstrators, wounding 20 as follows:

1) Yasser Jadallah ‘El-Barrim, 15, wounded by a live
bullet in the right foot;

2) Mohammed Nemer Hijazi, 17, wounded by a live bullet
in the left foot;

3) Riad Salman Shureitah, 18, wounded by a live bullet
in the chest;

4) Fayez Abu Shabab, 15, wounded by a live bullet in the
right foot;

5) Saleh Ibrahim Abu Tu’eima, 17, wounded by a live
bullet in the right leg;

6) Ziad Hani Abu Rezeq, 23, wounded by a live bullet in
the right foot;

7) Ahmed Mousa El-‘Aqqad, 23, wounded by shrapnel from a
live bullet in the chest;

8) Asma’ ‘Abdel-Mon’em Abu Mustafa, 10, wounded by a
live bullet in the right knee;

9) Yasser Jamal Abu ‘Aassi, 22, wounded by a live bullet
in the right leg;

10) Maher Mohammed Dahlan, 17, wounded by a rubber-coated
metal bullet in the nose;

11) Hammad ‘Aayesh Barbakh, 12, wounded by a rubber-coated
metal bullet in the right knee;

12) Ussama Fathi El-Ghalban, 17, seriously wounded by a
live bullet in the right thigh;

13) Ahmed Jamal Doula, 12, wounded by a live bullet in
the right leg;

14) Wa’el ‘Ali Radwan, 25, wounded by a live bullet in
the right hand;

15) Mohammed ‘Abdel-Elah Shurrab, 16, wounded by a live
bullet in the chest;

16) Ziad ‘Ali Humeida, 17, wounded by a live bullet in
the right leg;

17) Ibrahim Fawzi Abu Mu’ammar, 13, wounded by a
rubber-coated metal bullet in the head;

18) Shadi Mohammed El-‘Assouli, 17, wounded by a live
bullet in the right thigh;

19) Ahmed Sami Abu Sel, 14, wounded by a live bullet in
the right leg; and

20) ‘Emad Mohammed Abu Sulaimeh, 14, wounded by a live
bullet in the abdomen.

 

Near Al-Shuhada’ junction, south of Gaza City,
Israeli occupation soldiers opened fire on dozens of civilian demonstrators,
wounding 23 with live ammunition and rubber-coated metal bullets as follows:

1) ‘Omar Mustafa El-Saloul, 11, from Nusseirat refugee
camp, wounded by a rubber-coated metal bullet in the head;

2) Hassan Mohammed El-Seidawi, 18, from Nusseirat
refugee camp, wounded by a live bullet in the left foot;

3) Sa’id Saleh El-Efranji, 19, from Nusseirat refugee
camp, wounded by a live bullet in the left thigh;

4) Ahmed Mousa El-Hour, 12, from Nusseirat refugee camp,
wounded by a live bullet in the right foot;

Clashes erupted between dozens of Palestinian
civilians and Israeli occupation forces near “Kfar Darom” settlement. An 18-year-old Palestinian civilian, Khalil
Yousef Ibrahim Fayadh, from Deir El-Balah, was killed by a live bullet in the
head, and 32 people, mostly children, were wounded as follows:

1) ‘Abdel-Majid Ghazi Shahin, 10, from Deir El-Balah,
seriously wounded by a live bullet in the cehst;

2) Ahmed Yousef Abu Mandil, 16, from Al-Maghazi refugee
camp, wounded by a live bullet in the back that paralyzed his lims;

3) Sabri Sa’id Bashir, 16, from Deir El-Balah, wounded
by a live bullet in the right hand;

4) Mohammed Rasmi Abu Qassem, 17, from Deir El-Balah,
wounded by a live bullet in the right thigh;

5) Hisham ‘Oleyan El-Khatib, 16, from Deir El-Balah,
wounded by a live bullet in the left hand;

6) Hamdan Jaber Baraka, 17, from Deir El-Balah, wounded
by a live bullet in the right leg;

7) Mohammed ‘Abdel-Halim Hussein, 18, from Deir

Near Al-Mentar Outlet, east of Gaza City,
demonstrators threw stones while 200m away from Israeli occupation forces,
positioned at the entrance to a settlement road leading to the Green Line. Israeli soldiers responded with firing live
ammunition and rubber-coated bullets at demonstrators. A 13-year-old Palestinian civilian, Mahmoud
Khamis Husni El-Sawaf, from Al-Tuffah neighborhood in Gaza City, was killed by
a live bullet in the chest. According to
eyewitnesses, El-Sawaf was sitting on the back of an ambulance, approximately
150m away from the Israeli forces. He
did not participate in clashes when he was shot by an Israeli sniper from a gun
equipped with a silencer. Additionally,
20 demonstrators, mostly children, were wounded as follows:

1) ‘Abdel-‘Azziz Tal’at El-‘Amarin, 15, from Al-Zaytoun
neighborhood in Gaza City, wounded by a live bullet in the left foot;

2) Mohammed ‘Atta Sukkar, 16, from Al-Shojaeya

At approximately 07:30 local time, a student march
moved from Jabalya, Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahia towards Beit Hanoun (Erez)
Crossing in the northern Gaza Strip. Around 1,500 Palestinian students gathered near Erez industrial zone. Israeli occupation soldiers, positioned in a
nearby military location, fired live ammunition, rubber-coated metal bullets
and tear gas at demonstrators from a distance of 50-100m. In addition to those who suffered from tear
gas inhalation, 22 people, mostly children, were wounded as follows:

1) Ahmed Jamal El-Neder, 15, from Jabalya, wounded by a
live bullet in the left leg;

2) Ahmed Sa’id Abu Seif, 16, from Jabalya, wounded by a
live bullet in the left leg;

wounded by a live bullet in the neck;

by a live bullet in the left thigh;

7) Nader Rabah Abu Shehadeh, 16, from Jabalya, wounded
by a live bullet in the left leg;

by a live bullet in the left thigh;

19) Nu’man Mohammed Ziada, 15, from Jabalya, wounded by
three live bullets in the abdomen and the left thigh and hand;

20) Mohammed Ahmed El-Najjar, 15, from Jabalya, wounded
by a live bullet in the right foot;

21) Shaher ‘Abdel-Salam ‘Abdel-‘Aal, 20, from Jabalya,
wounded by a live bullet in the left foot; and

22) Walid ‘Abdel-Latif Mousa, 14, from Jabalya, wounded
by a live bullet in the left thigh.

 

At approximately 14:30 local time, Israeli occupation
soldiers at a military roadblock at the northern entrance to Al-Bireh, fired at
an ambulance of Bitounia Municipality. The ambulance was on duty evacuating the wounded, when Israeli soldiers
fired rubber-coated metal bullets at it. The front window of the vehicle was broken and its driver, Ibrahim Ahmed
Mousa Shalabi, 31, from Bitounia, was injured in the face and the right wrist.

 

Sunday,
September 30, 2001

 

At approximately 00:30 local time, Israeli occupation
soldiers at Taybeh roadblock, west of Tulkarm, opened fire on two Palestinian
civilian cars. Two Palestinian laborers,
who traveled in the cars, were killed as follows:

1) Khalil ‘Abdel-Halim Nasser El-Sarafandi, 52, from
‘Askar refugee camp in Nablus, killed by a live bullet in the head; and

2) Husni Mustafa Abu Leil, 19, from Balata refugee camp
in Nablus, killed by four live bullets in the shoulder, the chest and the left
thigh and hand.

 

In addition, five laborers were wounded as follows:

1) Fathi Darwish Sawalmeh, 25, from Balata refugee camp
in Nblus, wounded by shrapnel from live bullets in the right elbow and knee;

2) Jihad ‘Azmi Mohammed ‘Aazem, 24, from Sabastia
village near Nablus, wounded by shrapnel from live bullets in the left
shoulder;

3) Mohammed ‘Abdel-Rahim Nemer Saleh, 35, from Balata
refugee camp in Nablus, wounded by shrapnel from live bullets in the left
shoulder;

4) Mohammed Ahmed Kafafi, 32, from ‘Askar refugee camp
in Nablus, wounded by a live bullet in the left shoulder; and

5) Ussama Mahmoud Nasrallah, 23, from Balata refugee
camp in Nablus, wounded by a live bullet in the left shoulder.

 

According to investigations carried out by the
Palestinian Society for the Protection of Human Rights and the Environment
(LAW), Israeli soldiers fired at the car willfully when no threat was posed to
their lives.

 

At approximately 10:00 local time, dozens of
Palestinian civilians demonstrated in the space separating the western area of
Khan Yunis refugee camp from Al-Tuffah checkpoint separating Khan Yunis from its
Al-Mawasi area. The demonstrators threw
stones towards Israeli occupation soldiers at the aforementioned checkpoint,
who responded with firing tear gas canisters. In the afternoon, clashes escalated and extended to the north of Al-Amal
neighborhood. Palestinian demonstrators
threw stones towards an Israeli military location in the vicinity of “Gani Tal”
settlement. Israeli soldiers fired live
ammunition, rubber-coated metal bullets and tear gas canisters at the demonstrators. Eight demonstrators, mostly children, were
wounded as follows:

1) Mohammed Salim Shurrab, 18, wounded by a live bullet
in the left hand;

2) Ismail Walid Abu ‘Abdu, 17, wounded by a live bullet
in the left leg;

3) ‘Abdel-Mun’em Ibrahim Saqer, 18, wounded by a live
bullet in the left leg;

4) Eyad Ibrahim Barbakh, 14, seriously wounded by a live
bullet in the left leg;

5) Khaled Ahmed Saqer, 12, seriously wounded by a live
bullet in the right leg;

6) ‘Abdel-Karim Mohammed El-Farra, 22, wounded by a live
bullet in the pelvis;

7) Mohammed ‘Essam Abu ‘Abdu, 14, wounded by a
rubber-coated metal bullet in the left elbow; and

8) Hashem Hamed Abu Touha, 20, wounded by a live bullet
in the right foot.

 

At approximately 12:00 local time, clashes erupted
between dozens of Palestinian civilians and Israeli occupation forces,
positioned at demarcation lines between areas under their control and those
under full control of the Palestinian National Authority in Hebron. Palestinian civilians threw stones towards
Israeli soldiers who responded with opening fire. Palestinian security men, including Nidhal
Mohammed Subhi El-Fakhouri, 28, a first lieutenant of the Palestinian
Preventive Security Service, intervened to move the demonstrators away from the
demarcation lines. However, an Israeli
sniper atop of a Palestinian building fired at him, wounding him with two
explosive bullets in the face and the right shoulder. He was evacuated to ‘Aalia Hospital in the
city, where he was soon pronounced dead. In addition, seven demonstrators were wounded as follows:

1) Medhat Mohammed ‘Amru, 16, wounded by a live bullet
in the left thigh;

2) ‘Ezziddin ‘Aashour El-Natsheh, 24, wounded by a live
bullet in the buttocks;

3) ‘Abla ‘Abdel-Jabbar, 42, wounded by shrapnel from
live bullets in the back;

4) Mohammed ‘Abdel-Hafizh Abu Sneineh, 12, wounded by
shrapnel from live bullets in the right foot;

5) Majed Ishaq El-Wohoush, 25, wounded by a
rubber-coated metal bullet in the back;

6) Mohammed Hazem El-Salaymeh, 16, wounded by shrapnel
from live bullets in the back; and

7) Mohammed Hamdan Melhem, 35, wounded by a
rubber-coated metal bullet in the right hand.

 

Monday,
October 1, 2001

 

At approximately 16:00 local time, dozens of
Palestinian civilians demonstrated in the space separating Al-Amal neighborhood
from “Gani Tal” settlement, west of Khan Yunis. They threw stones towards Israeli military vehicles in the vicinity of
the settlement. Israeli occupation
soldiers fired at the demonstrators, wounding three as follows:

1) Mahmoud Ibrahim Shahwan, 11, wounded by a
rubber-coated metal bullet in the right eye;

2) Mohammed Ahmed El-Banna, 18, wounded by a live bullet
in the left thigh; and

3) Ref’at Khalil Gannan, 18, wounded by shrapnel from a
live bullet in the head.

 

At approximately 16:30 local time, Israeli occupation
soldiers at Deir Ebzi’ roadblock near Ramallah, fired at Hisham ‘Abdullah
Darraj, 25, from Kharabtha village near Ramallah, wounding him by a live bullet
that entered the back and exited the abdomen. He was fired at with no apparent reason when he was traveling in a taxi. PCHR was informed that Israeli soldiers
evacuated Darraj to an Israeli hospital after they had denied the access of a
Palestinian ambulance to the area.

 

Tuesday,
October 2, 2001

 

At approximately 12:00 local time, students and
employees of Bir Zeit University and members of the Popular Committee for the
Protection of the Palestinian People demonstrated near an Israeli military
roadblock on Ramallah-Bir Zeit road (Surda roadblock). Israeli occupation soldiers fired
rubber-coated metal bullets and tear gas canisters at the demonstrators and at
journalists who were in the area. Two
Palestinian journalists and a French citizen, member of the Popular Committee
for the Protection of the Palestinian People, were wounded by rubber-coated
metal bullets. Another Palestinian
journalist suffered from tear gas inhalation and was beaten by Israeli
soldiers. The wounded were:

1) Rebhi El-Kubri, 33, a journalist from Ramallah,
wounded by a rubber-coated metal bullet in the left shoulder;

2) Mahmfouzh Abu Turk, 52, a journalist from Jerusalem,
wounded by a rubber-coated metal bullet in the right leg;

3) Naliete Gie, 55, from France, wounded by a
rubber-coated metal bullet in the head; and

4) Jaghoub Jareh Jaghoub, 25, a journalist from
Ramallah, suffered from tear gas inhalation and was beaten.

 

Wednesday,
October 3, 2001

 

At approximately 16:00 local time, ‘Abdel-Karim
Tayseer El-Hefnawi, 18, from Jablaya, was wounded in the back by a live bullet
fired by Israeli occupation soldiers. El-Hefnawi was participating in the funeral procession of five martyrs
killed in the morning when Israeli occupation forces shelled the north of Beit
Lahia. He was, along with dozens of
people, near the eastern border of the Gaza Strip when he was fired at by
Israeli soldiers.

 

At approximately 16:30 local time, dozens of
Palestinian civilians demonstrated in the west of Khan Yunis refugee camp. They threw stones at Israeli occupation
soldiers, positioned in Al-Nouria military location. Israeli soldiers fired at the demonstrators,
wounding three as follows:

1) Mohammed Ziad Ahmed, 11, wounded by a live bullet in
the right hand;

2) Bilal Jamal El-Da’abseh, 16, wounded by a live bullet
in the left shoulder; and

3) Rami ‘Aatef El-Qahwaji, 16, wounded by a live bullet
in the right leg.

 

In addition, dozens of demonstrators suffered from
tear gas inhalation.

 

2. Shelling of, and
Incursions into Palestinian Cities and Residential Areas

 

Thursday, September 27, 2001

 

In the morning, Israeli
occupation forces, positioned at the Egyptian border resumed shelling of
Palestinian houses in Rafah. This escalation
came after an incursion into Block “O” area and Qeshta neighborhood adjacent to
the border. The shelling and incursion,
which lasted from the previous day up to 04:00 local time, resulted in the
deaths of three Palestinians and the injury of 16, three of whom were in
critical condition. In addition, a
number of people were evacuated to hospitals because of suffering either from
bruises or from nervous breakdowns. Eight houses were totally destroyed without their residents having been
able to evacuate their furniture and property, while a number of houses were
severely damaged, including some which were totally burnt.

 

PCHR’s field officer in
Rafah reported that in the morning, the Israeli forces resumed firing. The gunfire continued sporadically up to
19:30 local time and live bullets hit areas approximately 2km away from Salah
El-Din Gate at the Egyptian border. At
approximately 17:00 local time, a 14-year-old Palestinian civilian, Ma’awia
‘Ali Ahmed El-Nahhal, was killed by a live bullet in the chest, while he was at
‘Omar Ben Al-Khattab Street, approximately 600m away from the border. In addition, eight Palestinian civilians,
including four children and a woman who was near her house in Kherbat Al-‘Adas
area, approximately 2km away from the border, were wounded as follows:

1) Mutteira Hamdan Dhuheir,
75, wounded by a live bullet in the right shoulder;

2) Nidhal Ibrahim Qeshta, 20,
seriously wounded by a live bullet in the chest;

3) Naji Hassan El-Jamal, 38,

wounded by shrapnel in the pelvis;

In the morning, Israeli
occupation forces, positioned at the Egyptian border, opened fire on

in Tal Al-Rumeida neighborhood and atop of Palestinian houses in Jabal Al-Rahma
neighborhood, fired artillery shells and heavy and medium caliber bullets at
Palestinian houses in Al-Shiekh, Al-Zahed and Bab Al-Zawia neighborhoods and
Faisal, Al-Manara and Wadi Al-Tuffah streets in the center of Hebron. The shelling coincided with the end of the
Friday prayer as thousands of prayers were getting out of mosques. Emam Mohammed Rashad El-Sharif, 25, who had
just gone out of a mosque in Al-Sheikh neighborhood, was killed by a heavy
caliber bullet in the head. In addition,
16 Palestinian civilians were injured as follows:

1) Zakria Mohammed Abu Rajab,
21, seriously injured by a heavy caliber bullet in the right thigh and by
shrapnel throughout the body;

2) ‘Abed ‘Omran Hassan
Wazwaz, injured by shrapnel in the head and the shoulders;

3) Ashraf Sa’id Wazwaz, 19,
injred by shrapnel in the face;

4) ‘Abdel-Hakim Hashem
Qannibi, 75, injured by a heavy caliber bullet in the left shoulder;

5) Hussam Ishaq Mahfuzh, 19,
injured by a heavy caliber bullet in the right thigh;

6) Mutei’a Jamil El-Natsheh,
52, injured by shrapnel in several parts of the body;

7) Mohammed Jebril
El-Joulani, 54, injured by shrapnel in the neck;

8) Nidhal Kamal El-Kittani,
14, injured by shrapnel in the abdomen and the right shoulder;

9) Feras ‘Eissa El-Qeimari,
7, injured by shrapnel in the neck;

10) Ussama Rushdi El-Shweiki,
30, injured by shrapnel in the abdomen;

11) ‘Azziz Ahmed Ghanem, 15,
injured by shrapnel in the right thigh;

12) Ayman Hamza Shahin, 24,
injured by shrapnel in the left thigh;

13) Mohammed Mahmoud El-Ja’ba,
35, injured by shrapnel in the right shoulder;

14) Ghaleb Mohammed El-Tawil,
40, injured by shrapnel in the right shoulder;

15) ‘Adnan Mohammed El-Jamal,
16, injured by shrapnel in the back; and

16) ‘Eissa Mohammed
El-Qawasmi, 70, injured by shrapnel in the left leg.

 

At approximately 13:00
local time, Israeli occupation soldiers on a tank positioned at bypass road
(60), opened fire on a site of the Palestinian National Security Forces at the
entrance of Bani Na’im village, northeast of Hebron, and on Palestinian houses
in Wadi Al-Jouz neighborhood in Hebron. Soon, dozens of Palestinian children gathered and started throwing
stones towards the tank. Israeli
soldiers fired at the demonstrators, Palestinian houses and the security
site. Mohammed Yousef El-Tarayra, 10,
from Bani Na’im village, was killed by a heavy caliber bullet in the
pelvis. In addition, two Palestinians
were injured as follows:

1) Ra’ed Mufleh Khuleifat,
25, a visitor from Jordan, injured by shrapnel in the face; and

2) Eyad Jamal ‘Aabdin, 19, a
first lieutenant of the Palestinian National Security Forces, injured by
shrapnel in the right arm.

 

At approximately 20:30
local time, Israeli occupation forces, positioned in the vicinity of “Gani Tal”
settlement, west of Khan Yunis, fired heavy and medium caliber bullets at
Al-Satar Al-Gharbi area, north of Khan Yunis. Such gunfire was preceded by an exchange of fire between Palestinian
gunmen and Israeli occupation forces, which extended to other areas such as the
west of Al-Amal neighborhood, the west of Khan Yunis refugee camp and
Al-Nemsawi neighborhood. Israeli
occupation forces responded with shelling Palestinian residential communities,
causing severe damage to a number of houses in Khan Yunis refugee camp and
housing buildings in Al-Nemsawi neighborhood, but no casualties were reported.

 

Saturday, September 29, 2001

 

In the morning, Ahmed
Mohammed ‘Awaja, 25, from Rafah, was pronounced dead at Shifa’ Hospital in Gaza
City from a wound he received in the head by a heavy caliber bullet fired by
Israeli occupation forces three days earlier. Israeli occupation forces, reinforced with tanks and bulldozers, had
moved into Block “O” area and Qeshta neighborhood, adjacent to the Egyptian
border south of Rafah. During the
shelling and incursion, which lasted up to 04:00 local time on Thursday, three
Palestinians were killed and 16 were injured, three of whom were in critical
condition. ‘Awaja was among those who
were critically injured. He received a
heavy caliber bullet in the head. Since
then, he had been in the intensive care unit at Shifa’ Hospital in Gaza City
until he was pronounced dead.

 

From 08:00 to 20:00 local
time, tanks of the Israeli occupation forces, positioned at the Egyptian
border, opened fire on Palestinian houses in Block “O” area, Qeshta
neighborhood and ‘Omar Ben Al-Khattab Street. Some houses in Al-Shaboura area, approximately 1,000m north of the
border, were also hit by live bullets. Some houses were damaged and seven Palestinian civilians, including a
woman and four children, were injured as follows:

1) Bilal Ahmed Barhoum, 12,
injured by shrapnel in the lower jaw;

2) Nadi Mohammed Abu Salim,
13, injured by shrapnel in the face;

3) Maysa’ ‘Atteya Zannoun,
23, injured by shrapnel in the head;

4) Ahmed ‘Essam Qeshta, 13,
injured by shrapnel in the left hand;

5) Adham Jaber Qeshta, 13,
injured by a live bullet in the left knee;

6) Suleiman ‘Abdel-Hamid
El-Riati, 47, injured by a live bullet in the right forearm; and

7) Ra’fat Khalil Abu Mour,
25, injured by a live bullet in the head.

 

At approximately 12:20
local time, Israeli occupation forces, positioned in “Ramat Yishai” and “Beit
Hadasa” settlements and surrounding military sites, fired artillery shells and
heavy and medium caliber bullets at Palestinian houses and shops in the center
of Hebron. Rebhi Mahmoud Ahmed
El-Bayedh, 51, was injured by a heavy caliber bullet in the heart. He was evacuated to ‘Aalia Hospital where he was
pronounced dead approximately half an hour later. PCHR was informed that El-Bayedh was injured
from approximately 500m when he was inside his shop in Wadi Al-Tuffah Street in
the center of the city. In addition,
seven people were injured as follows:

1) Khaled Sadiq Tubakhi, 17,
critically injured by a live bullet in the head;

2) Nemer Subhi Darwish
El-Rujbi, 33, injured by a live bullet in the left foot;

3) Bajes Taleb Hadoush, 19,
injured by shrapnel in the left hand;

4) Faisal ‘Eissa El-Hassasna,
51, injured by shrapnel in the left hand;

5) ‘Azziza Mohammed
Barad’eya, 47, injured by a live bullet in the right foot;

6) Shadi Zakaria Abu
Mourkhia, 20, injured by shrapnel in the right thigh; and

7) Ref’at Mohammed
El-‘Oweiwi, 19, injured by shrapnel in the head.

 

At approximately 20:30
local time, a 400-square-meter, four-story Palestinian house, comprised of six
flats, in which 57 people live, owned by Ahmed Salameh Abu Hashem, in Tal
Al-Sultan neighborhood in Rafah was shelled by Israeli occupation forces,
positioned in a military location in Tal Z’orob area, approximately 400m
away. PCHR’s field officer in Rafah
reported that a bedroom of a flat on the first floor burnt and its walls,
windows and doors were severely damaged. Residents of the house had already evacuated all the flats and had lived
on the first floor since the outbreak of Al-Aqsa Intifada, fearing of
shelling. In addition, a number of
electric transmitters were damaged, cutting electricity from Rafah for two
hours, and from Tal Al-Sultan neighborhood until the following day.

 

Sunday, September 30, 2001

 

At approximately 12:00,
Israeli occupation forces, positioned near Salah El-Din Gate at the Egyptian
border, opened fire on ‘Omar Ben Al-Khattab Street, south of Rafah. Ibrahim Jom’a El-‘Ojeili, 61, was injured by
shrapnel in the head. He was evacuated
to Al-Joneina Hospital in Rafah.

 

Monday, October 1, 2001

 

At approximately 21:00
local time, Israeli occupation forces, positioned at the Egyptian border, south
of Rafah, shelled Block “O” area, Tal Al-Sultan and Qeshta neighborhoods, and
the west of Rafah refugee camp. A number
of Palestinian houses and civilian facilities were severely damaged as follows:

1) A bedroom of a
120-square-meter, one-story house, in which seven people live, owned by
Mohammed Harb Abu Hilal, was totally burnt.

2) A 70-square-meter store,
owned by Sa’di Mohammed Zo’rob, in which he had put all of his house’s
furniture, was totally burnt.

3) An under-construction flat
on the sixth floor of a 350-square-meter building, owned by ‘Ezzat ‘Abdel-Qader
Dhuheir, was totally burnt.

4) Three greenhouses, owned
by Farouq Mohammed Bureika, were totally burnt.

5) Front and back windows of
a civilian car, owned by Ahmed Salameh Abu Hashem, were broken.

 

Wednesday, October 3, 2001

 

In a disproportionate retaliation in response to an
attack on “Elli Sinai” settlement in Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip by
two Palestinian gunmen, Israeli occupation forces killed six Palestinians, two
farmers and four security men, and injured four. Israeli occupation forces moved into areas
under full control of the Palestinian National Authority, north of Beit Lahia,
under the cover of intensive shelling, while bulldozers were sweeping land and
destroying buildings. 

 

At approximately 05:00 local time, Israeli occupation
forces, reinforced with tanks and bulldozers, moved into Palestinian areas in
the northern Gaza Strip. Israeli tanks
and military locations around Jewish settlements established on Palestinian
land in the north of Beit Lahia intensively shelled the Palestinian areas. The incursion coincided with an attack by
Israeli gunboats on Beit Lahia. An
artillery shell fell onto a Palestinian farm in Al-Sayafa area, north of Beit
Lahia, 700m south of “Elli Sinai” settlement. The owner of the farm, Maher Edris Ahmed Khudeir, 23, and a farmer,
Mahmoud Mohammed El-Shurafa, 25, both from Beit Lahia, were killed.

 

The Israeli forces moved into Palestinian areas from
two directions; 1-2 km from the north towards the south, and 3-3½ km from the
east towards the west. They shelled
eight Palestinian security sites, adjacent to Jewish settlements, totally
destroying them. At approximately 07:50
local time, site (6) of the Palestinian National Security Forces, south of
“Dogit” settlement, was shelled by the Israeli forces. Three Palestinian security men were killed as
follows:

1) Nour El-Din Mohammed Salim Qweider, 24, from Al-Daraj
neighborhood in Gaza City, killed by shrapnel from an artillery shell in the
upper part of the body;

2) Mahmoud Ibrahim Abu Hani, 19, from Al-Shati refugee
camp, killed by shrapnel from an artillery shell throughout the body; and

3) Wa’el Fu’ad ‘Awwad, 25, from Deir El-Balah, killed by
shrapnel from an artillery shell throughout the body.

 

Furthermore, three security men were injured as
follows:

1) Mohammed Ahmed ‘Awadh, 23, from Sheikh Radwan in Gaza
City, seriously injured by shrapnel from an artillery shell throughout the
body;

2) Sufian ‘Abdel-Fattah Abu El-Jedian, 28, from Tal
El-Za’tar area in Jabalya, injured by shrapnel from an artillery shell in the
chest; and

3) Nader Tawfiq El-Bes, 22, from Tal El-Za’tar area in
Jabalya, injured by shrapnel in the left hand.

 

They were evacuated to Shifa’ Hospital in Gaza City.

 

At approximately 09:45 local time, Israeli occupation
forces fired at Sayed Salim Mahmoud Ziara, 32, from Al-Tuffah neighborhood in
Gaza City, a member of the Palestinian National Security Forces, killing him
with a live bullet in the head. In
addition, a Palestinian farmer, Anwar Ramadan Abu Halima, 28, from Beit Lahia,
was injured by shrapnel in the left hand. He was evacuated to Shifa’ Hospital in Gaza City.

 

At approximately 16:00
local time, Israeli occupation forces, positioned in “Ramat Yishai,” “Beit
Hadasa” and Avraham Avino” settlements and in surrounding military locations,
fired artillery shells and heavy and medium caliber bullets at Abu Sneineh,
Al-Sheikh, ‘Ein Khair El-Din, Al-Zahed and Bab Al-Zawia neighborhoods, and
Al-‘Adel, Al-Manara, Wadi Al-Heria, Al-Tuffah and Faisal streets in
Hebron. Heavy caliber bullets and
shrapnel from artillery shells hit walls of ‘Aalia Hospital, destroying some of
its equipment. Patients and the staff
were extremely terrified. At
approximately 22:30 local time, the Israeli forces resumed shelling the
city. The building of the Palestinian
Chamber of Commerce and a civilian car were damaged. Furthermore, six Palestinian civilians were
injured as follows:

1) Fatema Mustafa El-Juneidi,
70, injured by shrapnel in the face and the chest;

2) Bajes Mohammed Shureitah,
25, injured by shrapnel in the left leg;

3) Fares Mohammed El-Natsheh,
12, injured by shrapnel in the left thigh;

4) Hazem Salah Seder, 28,
injured by a medium caliber bullet in the left hand that cut an artery;

5) Sa’id Ya’qoub Abu Rumouz,
44, injured by shrapnel in the chest and the left leg; and

6) Kamal Mousa El-Juneidi,
28, injured by shrapnel in the left shoulder.

 

At approximately 22:00
local time, Israeli occupation forces, positioned in Tal Zo’rob area at the
Egyptian border, shelled Zo’rob neighborhood in Rafah. An artillery shell hit a house owned by Ahmed
Salameh Abu Hashem, which had been also shelled on Saturday.[1]
Another flat, owned by Saleh Ahmed Abu Hashem, in which six people live, was
burnt. At the same time, Israeli
occupation forces, positioned in a military location in Al-Mawasi area in Rafah,
opened fire on Palestinian houses in Tal Al-Sultan neighborhood, west of
Rafah. A 15-year-old Palestinian
civilian, Salim ‘Ali Abu El-‘Sa’id, was injured by a live bullet in the right
thigh, while he was near his family’s house. He was evacuated to Al-Joneina Hospital in Rafah. According to medical sources, he was in
stable condition.

 

3. Four Palestinians Killed
in Mysterious Explosions

 

On Friday, September 28, 2001, two mysterious
explosions occurred in Rafah and Hebron, killing four Palestinians and injuring
two seriously. Palestinian security
sources stated that Israeli occupation forces might have been involved in the
explosions to kill Palestinian activists.

 

On Friday, at approximately 16:15 local time, a
heavy explosion occurred in Wadi Al-Heria area, south of Hebron. Ambulances and Palestinian security men moved
towards the area, where they discovered that the explosion occurred in a flat
on the first floor of a house. When they
entered the flat, they found the body of a young man, who received shrapnel in
the head and the abdomen. The young man
was identified as Emam Ahmed Majed El-Adhami, 24, from Hebron, who was known as
an activist of the Islamic Jihad.

 

At approximately 21:00 local time, a heavy
explosion occurred in the area surrounding Al-Nour mosque in Al-Brazil
neighborhood, adjacent to the Egyptian border, south of Rafah. A Palestinian was seen getting out of the
area injured. He was evacuated to Al-Joneina
Hospital in Rafah. Two minutes later, an
Israeli tank came to the area from Salah El-Din Gate at the border,
approximately 500m west of the area. The
tank fired artillery shells and heavy caliber bullets at Palestinian houses and
ambulances. Half an hour later, the tank
withdrew and ambulances were able to reach the place of the explosion. They evacuated bodies of three young men from
the area and a young man who was injured. The three young men were identified later as:

1) Shadi Jad El-Karim Abu Lafi, 20,
from Khan Yunis;

2) Ahmed ‘Aatef Mahdi, 21, from Khan
Yunis; and

3) Mohammed Mohammed Zuhod, 20, from
Khan Yunis.

 

Those injured were:

1) Mohammed Shafiq El-Khatib, 18,
from Rafah, critically injured by shrapnel in the head and the back; and

2) Walid Abu ‘Akker, 22, from Khan
Yunis, critically injured by shrapnel throughout the body.

 

PCHR’s field officer in Rafah has not been able to
gather full information about the circumstances of the explosion. However, remainders of a cement block, one of
five put in the area by Israeli occupation forces two weeks ago, were seen in
the area. Palestinian security sources
stated that the Israeli forces might have been involved in the incident,
targeting members of the Palestinian popular resistance at the border.

Conference Against Racism in Durban in South Africa to adopt crucial decisions
condemning practices by Israel and its belligerent occupation forces in the
Occupied Palestinian Territories, which can only be described as apartheid
against the Palestinian people.

2) Upon the international community to provide immediate
and independent international protection for the Palestinian people in the
Occupied Palestinian Territories.

3) Upon the High Contracting Parties to the Fourth
Geneva Convention of 1949 to reconvene in order to take effective measures to
protect Palestinian civilians in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, in
accordance with their obligations under article 1 to ensure the respect of the
Convention.

4) Upon the international community to investigate and
prosecute those believed to have committed war crimes in the Occupied
Palestinian Territories before international courts

5) Upon the ICRC to enhance its presence, expand its
activities, and intensify its field observations throughout the Occupied
Palestinian Territories.

6) Upon the European Union to activate Article 2 of the
Euro-Israeli Association Agreement, which provides that Israel must respect
human rights.

7) Upon the international community to provide humanitarian and medical
assistance for the Palestinian people, whose living conditions are increasingly
deteriorating as a result of the continued siege imposed by the Israeli
occupation forces on the entire Occupied Palestinian Territories.
