Press Release

The Israeli occupying forces escalate their aggressions:

Two martyrs in Rafah and Beithlehem

Ref: 133/2000

Date: October 16, 2000

Time: 17:00 GMT

At the time of convening Sharm El-Sheikh summit in which the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat and the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak participate, the Israeli occupying forces escalated their aggression against the Palestinian people. Today, two Palestinians were killed in Rafah and Beithlehem.

At 15:40 GMT this afternoon, the Israeli occupying forces deployed in Rafah Border Crossing suddenly shot at Palestinian policemen (members of the Palestinian National Security Service) in the Crossing, and killed Musbah Abdel Qader Abu A’teeq, 29 years old, from Beit Lahia, by a bullet in the head. Eyewitnesses stated that shooting by the Israeli occupying forces started suddenly without any clashes being reported in the area. Some other people were wounded in the same incident, including Emran Doghmosh, 35 years old and a member of the Palestinian National Security Service, who was wounded by a bullet in the right leg; Ali El-Masri, 23 years old, who was wounded by a bullet in the right arm; and Wae’l Abu El-Kas, 29 years old, who was wounded in the right knee. PCHR’s field officers reported that the Israeli occupying forces denied the access of ambulances into the Crossing, and shot at one of them. One of the bullets penetrated the body of one of these ambulances. After a 15-minute delay, the Israeli occupying forces allowed ambulances into the crossing and the wounded were evacuated to Shifa’ Hospital in Gaza. Following this incident, the Israeli occupying forces closed Rafah Border Crossing completely, after they opened it partially in the past few days to allow traveling of sick people, foreigners and Palestinian temporary visitors.

In Khan Yunis, the Israeli occupying forces used live ammunition, rubber-coated metal bullets and tear gas against Palestinian demonstrators. Clashes between the two sides are still continuous. PCHR’s field officer in Khan Yunis reported that 67 people were moved into hospitals after they were wounded by live ammunition and rubber-coated metal bullets. The child Alla’ Farahat, 14 years old, from Bani Suheila was wounded by a rubber-coated metal bullet in his eye shot by the Israeli occupying forces in clashes in Khan Yunis. Hospitals of Khan Yunis received 76 people who were hurt due to inhaling tear gas used by the Israeli occupying forces, while they were at home in most cases.

In the West Bank, clashes broke out between the Israeli occupying forces and

Palestinian civilians. The child Mo’ayyad Usama Al-Jawarish, 13 years old, from the refugee camp of A’ida near Beithlehem, was severely wounded in the head. Few minutes ago, the child died at hospital from his injury. Dozens of Palestinian civilians were wounded throughout the West Bank.

PCHR condemns the silence of the international community towards the crimes perpetrated by the Israeli occupying forces against Palestinian civilians in the occupied Palestinian territories, which have resulted in the killing of 94 Palestinian and injuring more than 2,500. PCHR reiterates its call for immediate international intervention to halt the crimes perpetrated by the Israeli occupying forces, establishing an international commission of inquiry under the auspices of the United Nations to investigate these crimes, and providing immediate international protection for Palestinian civilians in the occupied Palestinian territories.
