The Death of Citizen Due to the Injuries by Israeli Occupying Forces

Ref: 86/2000

Date: 28 June 2000

On 28 June 2000 the policeman Yousef Mahmoud Abu Nahel from Gaza, 23 years old died from gun wounds after being shoot on 17 May, 2000. Abu Nahel was working for the Palestinian Police Forces in Ramallah when clashes between Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli occupying forces took place during the 52nd anniversary of Al-Nakba (the anniversary of uprooting the Palestinian people from their land). Palestinian Police intervened to prevent the clashes between the Palestinians and Israeli occupying forces. At the same time other bloody clashes between Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli occupying forces that took place in different areas of West Bank and Gaza Strip resulted in death of 6 Palestinians. Among these, four died after they were shoot by the Israeli soldiers while the other two who were children died after being ran over by a settler in his car.

PCHR strongly condemned the actions and practices of Israeli occupying forces against the Palestinian people. Such actions led to death of 7 Palestinians and injury of hundred more civilians during the clashes between Palestinians and Israeli soldier at the time of the anniversary of Al-Nakba.

These actions present deliberate and clear orders given to Israeli soldiers to use excessive force against Palestinian demonstrators. PCHR reminds the High Contracting Parties to the IVth Geneva Convention of their obligations in the convention. Furthermore, the Centre calls upon them to immediately intervene in order to stop the grave violations of the convention, and to safe the lives of the Palestinians in the OPT.
