Press Release
The child Sami Abu Jazar dies:
Another evidence of the Israeli occupation forces’ crimes against Palestinian civilians
Ref: 127/2000
Date: October 12, 2000
Time: 8:00 GMT
This morning, the child Sami Fathi Abu Jazar, 12 years old, from Rafah, died from an injury in the head on Tuesday, October 10, 2000. The Israeli occupation forces shot fire at the head of the child Abu Jazar near Salah El-Din Gate on the borders with Egypt, when a number of school children gathered about 20m away from the Israeli military outpost in the area. Israeli soldiers responded to children’s stones with live ammunition, and severely injured the child Abu Jazar who was then evacuated to Shifa’ Hospital in Gaza.
Shooting the child Abu Jazar is another evidence of the continuous crimes committed by the Israeli occupation forces against Palestinian civilians, which led to the death of 88 people and injuring more than 2300 in less than two weeks. On the basis of observation and investigation by PCHR’s staff into the circumstances at which the child Abu Jazar was shot by the Israeli soldiers, it is clear that the Israeli military outpost in the area is well-fortified by cement blocks, and strongly tight from all sides, which make it impossible to be affected by all the stones of children. It is also impossible that throwing stones by children would in whatever conditions endanger the Israeli soldiers in the outpost. The outpost is 18m long and 15 wide, and its cement walls are 3m high surrounded by cubical cement blocks from outside. On the outpost’s walls, there are a number of apertures which are 60cm long and 40cm wide. From these apertures, muzzles of machine guns appear to shoot at Palestinian demonstrators. In the middle of the outpost, there is a 10m-high telecommunication tower with a video camera at its top. Another camera is fixed at one of the apertures on the walls, which are used to shoot fire. Observers are worried that the Israeli occupation forces use these cameras in computerized shooting, as several cases of shooting from these apertures were noticed without seeing any soldier in the place.
The child Abu Jazar was shot from a 20m distance, when he gathered with his colleagues while he was going home. The Israeli occupation soldiers had no mercy on his childhood, nor on his school bag on his back. This accident is another evidence of the Israeli occupation forces’ policy of intentional killing, because it was possible to disperse demonstrating children with a non-combat means, specially as the lives and safety of well-fortified Israeli soldiers inside the outpost were not- and could not be- endangered by any means.
