PCHR Completes a Training Course on Women’s Rights

On 17 August 2006, PCHR’s Training Unit and Women’s Unit completed a training course on women’s rights. Twenty-one policewomen from Deir El-Balah, Khan Yunis, and Rafah participated in the course, which was held in PCHR’s Khan Yunis branch.

The course was held over four day with a total of 16 training hours. It included a number of lectures by professionals from the Centre that covered topics such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, personal statute law, convention against torture, convention on the rights of the child, regulations governing the conduct of law enforcement personnel, and prisoners’ rights.

In the course’s closing ceremony, PCHR’s Director of Training, Bassam El-Aqra’, stated that the course concentrated on women’s rights and the linkage between that and the work of policewomen. He indicated that the course is part of a series of courses. Two courses were held in Gaza and Khan Yunis; and another course will be organized in the northern Gaza Strip.

The director of PCHR’s Women’s Unit, Mona El-Shawwa, thanked the participants for their attendance in the course. She encouraged continued contacts between them and the Centre after the course. She pointed that the course topics were selected based on a needs assessment conducted in cooperation with the director of the female police force.
