Statement of Condolence and Solidarity with Our Colleague Hani Al-Askari

With heavy hearts and deep anger, we received the devastating news this morning: yet another crime committed by Israeli occupation forces in northern Gaza City. This brutal attack claimed the lives of eight civilians, including the brother of our colleague Hani Izzat Al-Askari, who works as the Finance Manager at PCHR, as well as his brother’s young daughter. This tragedy is yet another chapter in the ongoing genocide being perpetrated by the IOF against the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR)—represented by its Chairperson, Board Members, General Director, and entire staff—condemns this heinous crime in the strongest possible terms and extends its deepest condolences and unwavering solidarity to our colleague Hani and his family.

The attack occurred at approximately 10:50 a.m. on Thursday, 29 May 2025, when Israeli warplanes targeted a group of civilians near Abu Iskandar Bakery, at the end of Al-Jalaa Street in northern Gaza City. Eight people were killed in the strike, including Amjad Izzat Ahmad Al-Askari, aged 36, and his five-year-old daughter Farah. His second daughter, Shahd, aged seven, was wounded along with several bystanders who were attempting to purchase basic necessities.

PCHR expresses its heartfelt condolences to our colleague Hani and his entire family, and to the families of all the victims. This act adds to the long list of crimes committed by Israeli forces against Palestinian civilians in Gaza, carried out under the shameful silence and apparent complicity of the international community—whose ongoing failure to protect civilians and uphold the principles of international humanitarian law is deeply troubling. The repeated targeting of civilians, civilian infrastructure, and entire families—killed in cold blood without justification over the past 20 months—reflects Israel’s clear intent to carry out acts of genocide at an unprecedented scale. This demands immediate action to halt the genocide and to ensure genuine accountability beyond mere condemnations.

In light of this, PCHR renews its urgent call on the international community to fulfil its legal and moral obligations: to act immediately to stop the genocide and to guarantee accountability and an end to impunity.
