PRESS RELEASE
Prison Sentence Extensions in the Israeli Military Court at Erez
Ref.,: 7/99
Date: 16th January, 1999
Yesterday, the Israeli military court at Erez in the Gaza Strip issued a military sentence to jail the 21-year-old student Rami Muhammad Husein Dweik from Nuseirat in the Gaza Strip for eight months. The detainee Dweik was arrested on September 8, 1998 near Erez checkpoint. The Israeli military attorney general accused him of taking actions against Israel and of belonging to the Hamas Movement.
The same court at a date after September 8 would have released the detainee Dweik with a financial penalty of 10,000 NIS (approximately $2,500), but he was not able to leave because his family could not pay the money.
In addition, the Israeli military court accused the student Hazam Walid Al-Hasary and the citizen Ismail Muhammad Abu Nar, both from the Gaza Strip, of belonging to a terrorist organization. At the same time, the court renewed the period of arrest of the detainees Khalid Hamdan, Suleiman Ghalban, Amin Shuhwan, Ibrahim Al-Hayek, and Ahmed Abaid, all of them from the Gaza Strip, until the court procedures against them are finished.
Moreover, the Israeli military court in Al-Majdal renewed the arrest period of the student Nadi Abu Sidu for 10 days in order to complete their interrogation of him.
The PCHR followed up the cases of all the mentioned detainees within the context of the legal assistance program that is provided by the Legal Unit. Finally, it is worth mentioning that the Israeli authorities prohibited Palestinian lawyers from visiting the detainees in its prisons through refusing to issue them proper permits.
