PCHR’s Women’s Rights Unit Organizes Lectures on the Personal Statute Law and Violence against Women
PCHR’s Women’s Rights Unit (WRU) organized three lectures this week as part of its legal awareness program for women. The lectures, which dealt with the Personal Status Law and violence against women aimed at raising increase women’s awareness about their legal rights and about violence against women, as defined in the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women, proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993.
The first lecture was held on 13 November 2005 in the Women’s Activities Center in al-Shati refugee camp. The WRU researcher, Majeda Shehada, talked to 20 women about violence against women, with emphasis on the concept of violence and its forms, as set in the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women.
On 14 November 2005, the second lecture was organized in coordination with the Palestinian Women’s Development Association in al-Boreij refugee camp. The WRU lawyer, Hanan Matar, discussed marriage in the context of the Personal Status Law applied in the Gaza Strip. In addition, Ms. Matar answered women’s questions on the issue. Thirty women attended the lecture.
The third lecture was held on 17 November 2005 in the Women’s Activities Center in Beit Hanoun. Thirty women attended the lecture which discussed violence against women. Majeda Shehada discussed the concept of violence as defined by the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women; and Ms. Hanan Matar discussed the articles relevant to violence against women in the Palestinian Penal Code. At the end of the lecture, both answered questions.
It is worth noting that two of the lectures, organized on 13 and 17 November, were held as part of the legal awareness project implemented by the WRU in coordination with the Swedish Kvinna till Knivva.
