PCHR welcomes the Passage of the Draft Law of the Independence of the Judiciary by the PLC

On 3 February 2000, the Palestinian Legislative Council passed the draft Law of the Independence of the Judiciary. PCHR highly appreciates the hard work carried out by the Palestinian legislature in the last two years to pass this draft law.

PCHR believes that this draft law, if ratified by the Palestinian Authority, will provide the necessary basic guarantees for the independence of the judiciary and for the protection of citizens’ rights. The provisions in the draft law regarding the financial independence of the judiciary will strengthen the Palestinian judiciary and promote separation of powers within the Palestinian Authority.

PCHR appeals to President Arafat to ratify the draft law within the specified time limit.
