PCHR Receives the Belgian Minister of Justice
On Sunday morning, 13 November 2005, PCHR received the Belgian Minister of Justice Mrs. Laurette Onkelinx and an accompanying delegation of Belgian officials and journalists.
The visitors were received by Mr. Raji Sourani, Director of PCHR, and Mr. Hamdi Shaqqura, Director of the Democratic Development Unit. Mr. Sourani welcomed Mrs. Onkelinx and the accompanying delegation. He also emphasised the importance of the visit as an indication of support for the human rights movement and for Palestinian rights.
Mr. Sourani briefed the visitors on PCHR’s activities on both the Israeli and the Palestinian levels, through its various units. He pointed out the obstacles that face PCHR, especially those relevant to human rights violations perpetrated by Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF). Mr. Sourani criticised the Israeli justice system, including the Israeli High Court, pointing out the discrimination practiced against Palestinians.
Mr. Sourani further briefed the Belgian Minster on the developments that have followed the unilateral redeployment of IOF around the Gaza Strip and the Israeli official declaration of the end of the military government in the Gaza Strip.
At the end of the meeting, Mr. Sourani handed the Belgian Minister PCHR’s souvenir emblem, in appreciation of her visit and her support for the human rights movement and Palestinian rights.
