On
Monday, 02 February 2015, the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR)
received on a delegation from the Swedish Social Democratic Party comprised of
the Secretary-General, Mr. Hans Josefsson, and President of the Party, Mr.
Peter Weiderud, in PCHR’s main office in Gaza City.
Mr.
Hamdi Shaqoura, PCHR’s Deputy Director for Program Affairs, Mrs. Mona
al-Shawwa, Director of PCHR’s Women’s Unit, and Mr. Samir Hassaniya, a lawyer
at PCHR’s Women’s Unit, received the delegation. PCHR’s representatives welcomed
the Swedish support for the Palestinian cause at the international level.
They
addressed the human rights conditions in the occupied Palestinian territory
(oPt), especially after the Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip last summer.
Moreover, they tackled the importance of conjugating international efforts to
pressurize Israeli in order to put an end to the Israeli-imposed closure on the
Gaza Strip for over 8 years, and to allow reconstruction in the Gaza Strip.
Additionally,
they discussed the need for an international action, especially by Sweden, to
put an end to the culture of impunity and ensure holding Israel accountable for
the illegal practices and war crimes committed against the Palestinian
civilians and property, including settlement crimes committed in the West Bank in
general, and in Jerusalem in particular.
The
meeting also addressed the internal Palestinian situation and the consequences
of the stalled reconciliation that has not been existent in reality anymore in
spite of the Shati’ agreement and the formation of the national unity
government last June. PCHR’s representatives stressed the importance of the
international support to encourage the parties to the reconciliation to
implement the agreement in order to overcome the current crisis and pave the
way for the unity government.
