On Thursday, 02 February 2023, the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) received a delegation from the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs. The delegation included Mr. Hasan Qanita, Director General of the Commission in Gaza; Mr. Jamal Mekhel, Director of Public Relations; and Mr. Wesam Abu Sultan, head of the Commission’s Legal Unit.
The delegation was received by lawyer Iyad al-‘Alami, PCHR’s Deputy Director for Legal Affairs; Dr. Ahlam al-Aqra’, Deputy Director of PCHR’s Legal Unit; and Shimaa al-Shawa, a lawyer at PCHR.
Al-‘Alami welcomed the delegation and reviewed PCHR’s activities, services and aid provided to detainees, ex-detainees and their families, as well as cooperation and partnership avenues with the Commission. Al-‘Alami emphasized that the just cause of Palestinian detainees top PCHR’s priorities and agenda since its foundation and to the present.
The visiting delegation expressed its appreciation for PCHR’s remarkable and distinctive role in serving the detainees cause over the past years. The delegation also thanked PCHR for its responsiveness with the Commission’s suggestions that aim to enhance joint cooperation and work between PCHR and the Commission in a way that serves the prisoners cause.
During the meeting, PCHR and the Commission agreed on continuous communication for the service of the cause of prisoners in the Israeli jails, especially those sick and denied family visitations; and to provide legal aid for ex-detainees as well as holding training courses for the Commission’s staff to raise their awareness on human rights and international humanitarian law.
