PCHR Prepares for Monitoring the Upcoming Parliamentary Elections in Cooperation with Civil Society Groups
PCHR has started to prepare for a campaign to monitor the upcoming Palestinian parliamentary elections, which will be held on 25 January 2005, in cooperation with dozens of NGOs, including al-Dameer Association for Human Rights; Women’s Affairs Centre; General Union of Palestinian Women; and Sharek Youth Forum.
PCHR has organized a series of preparatory meetings for its observers throughout the Gaza Strip. It has sent applications for approximately 530 observers to the Central Election Commission (CEC) to accredit them as local observers. Soon, PCHR will initiate a training program for its observers in preparation for monitoring the parliamentary elections.
PCHR, as an observation body accredited by the CEC, participated in monitoring the Palestinian presidential election, which was held on 9 January 2005. It also participated in monitoring the first and second stages of the elections of local councils in the Gaza Strip. It published a number of reports evaluating these elections.[1] PCHR also participated in monitoring the Palestinian presidential and parliamentary elections in January 1996.
PCHR is also preparing to monitor the fourth stage of the elections of local councils, which will be held on 15 December 2005 and will include 42 local councils, including 3 in the Gaza Strip. It is worth noting that the third stage of these elections included 104 local councils in the West Bank only.
Many of PCHR observers participated in the campaign led by PCHR to monitor the presidential election and the two stages of elections of local councils in the Gaza Strip.
PCHR hopes that the upcoming elections will be free and fair. PCHR confirms that it will participate in monitoring these elections, especially as it has a distinguished experience in this field.
