PCHR Organizes a Ceremony to Honor the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme
PCHR organized a ceremony to honor the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme (GCMHP) yesterday evening. The ceremony was held to celebrate the selection of GCMHP, represented by Mr. Abdul Hamid Afana, as the President of the Executive Committee of the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) in Copenhagen. GCMHP’s Chairman of the Board, Dr. Riyad Za’noun, the Program’s Director-General, Dr. Eyad El-Sarraj, and representatives of local NGO’s joined the ceremony.
Director of PCHR, Mr. Raji Sourani, opened the ceremony by congratulating GCMHP for its selection for the Presidency of IRCT’s Executive Committee. He noted that IRCT is one of the most important international bodies concerned with rehabilitation of torture victims, with membership of nearly 30 internationally-renowned organizations that include GCMHP. In addition, Mr. Sourani commended the Program’s role at the local and international levels, and its distinguished services to Palestinian society. Mr. Sourani stressed that the selection of GCMHP for the presidency is an achievement for Palestinian civil society and the Palestinian people as a whole.
Dr. Eyad Sarraj welcomed PCHR’s initiative to mark this event, which he considers to be a new cultural foundation in the relationship between civil society organizations. He stressed the importance of strengthening the relationship between these organizations for the benefit of the Palestinian people. In addition, Dr. Sarraj praised the important role PCHR plays in the field of human rights at the local and international levels.
In his speech, Dr. Abdul Hamid Afana affirmed that GCMHP’s selection to head IRCT’s executive committee places a large responsibility upon the Programme. However, it will also provide an important forum in which to portray the suffering of the Palestinian people, who have been living under occupation for 4 decades.
Mr. Raji Sourani presented PCHR’s souvenir emblem to Dr. Riyad Za’noun in honor of GCMHP’s accomplishments.
