PCHR Is Concerned at the Ongoing Security Chaos
PCHR remains deeply concerned about the latest escalation of security chaos in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT), which was demonstrated in two separate attacks on two citizens in Rafah and Gaza City two days ago. PCHR reiterates its call for the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) to take effective measures to end the ongoing state of security chaos, which threatens the safety and security of Palestinian civilians.
At approximately 04:00 on Monday, 28 March 2005, 5 masked persons attacked Dr. ‘Azmi Joma’a Abu Mour, 35, from Rafah, when he was going to a mosque in Tal al-Sultan neighborhood for the Dawn Prayer. He sustained injuries and bruises throughout the body. The attackers demanded Dr. Abu Mour withdraw his candidature in the Change and Reform Bloc of Hamas to the election of the Municipality of Rafah. Two days earlier, two masked persons threatened Dr. Abu Mour for the same reason.
At approximately 21:40 on the same day, attorney Majed Nemer al-Ja’farawi, 49, from Gaza City, was subject to an assassination attempt by unknown persons. A heavy explosion occurred in his car, which he had parked near Dabeet building in the center of Gaza City, as he was about to drive it. Al-Ja’farawi was moderately injured. PCHR is concerned that this attack was because of al-Ja’farawi’s candidature in the elections for the Palestine Bar Association, which will be held on Saturday, 2 April 2005.
PCHR strongly condemns these latest attacks and calls upon the PNA to make efforts to arrest the attackers and bring them to justice. PCHR also reiterates its call for the PNA to take immediate steps to end the phenomenon of the misuse of weapons in the OPT, which threatens the safety and security of Palestinian civilians.
