PCHR Holds a Consultative Meeting with Civil Society Organizations in Preparation for Monitoring Parliamentary Elections

On Monday, 23 May 2005, PCHR held a consultative meeting at its office in Gaza City with a number of Palestinian civil society organizations in preparation for monitoring the Palestinian parliamentary elections that will be held on 17 July 2005.

The meeting was attended by representatives of at least 40 civil society organizations throughout the Gaza Strip, most of which participated in the monitoring campaign over the Palestinian presidential election that was held on 9 January 2005.

PCHR monitored the latest Palestinian presidential election through at least 300 observers representing 26 NGOs.  PCHR also monitored the first and second phases of elections of local councils in the Gaza Strip, which were held on 27 January and 5 May 2005.

In a continuation of its work in this context, PCHR will recruit hundreds of observers to monitor the parliamentary elections, in cooperation with civil society organizations throughout the Gaza Strip.  PCHR appreciates the important role played by civil society in this regard as it supports democratic reform, encourages holding free and fair elections and seeks to establish a community observation body to monitor the upcoming parliamentary elections.
