The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) condemns the attack launched this morning against Shami al-Shami, a Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) Member from the Fatah movement. As a result of the gunfire attack, al-Shami was wounded by 2 bullets in his right thigh. PCHR calls upon the Attorney General to investigate the attack and prosecute the perpetrators.
According to investigations conducted by PCHR, at approximately 01:30am on Sunday, 01 July 2012, Shami Yousef Mohammed al-Shami (47), a PLC Member from the Fatah movement, arrived at his house in the Wadi Bourqin neighborhood, west of Jenin. Once al-Shami stepped out of his car to open his garage door, an unknown person fired at al-Shami with a pistol from a range of approximately 10 meters. This individual subsequently escaped. After being stuck with 2 bullets in his right thigh, al-Shami was transported to the Jenin Public Hospital to receive medical treatment, where his wounds were described as moderate.
Major General Talal Dweikat, the Governor of Jenin, stated to the media that the persons who fired at al-Shami have not been identified yet. He also said that security services are investigating the incident to find the perpetrators as soon as possible.
It should be noted that, on 02 May 2012, Palestinian security services carried out a security campaign in Jenin after individuals shot at the house of Qaddoura Mousa, the former Governor of Jenin. Mousa later passed away from a subsequent acute heart attack. As a result of the security campaign, dozens of fugitives were arrested, in addition to a number of security service members who were described by the security sources as a reason for security chaos in Jenin.
