Ref: 31/2014
The Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) condemns arresting a
Palestinian who was wounded in the last Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip by
Israeli authorities while he was on his way home from a therapeutic trip in a
Turkish hospital. PCHR is deeply concerned over the possibility of him being
subjected to torture.
According to information available to PCHR Legal Unit, on Thursday,
11 September 2014, Israeli intelligence officers detained Ghassan Maher Said
Abdel Nabi (22) and his mother Subhia Abdel Nabi from Bin Gurion Arport on
their way back from Turkey, as he had been receiving medication in Turkish
hospital for the past two weeks. Israeli authorities released the mother later,
but kept the aforementioned civilian in detention.
Abdel Nabi, from Beit Lahia, sustained wounds to his abdomen and
was transferred to Turkey for treatment because of his serious medical
condition and the unavailability of proper medication in the Gaza Strip. The
aforementioned civilian headed to Turkey on 28 August 2014 through “Erez” (Beit
Hanoun) crossing following an agreement between Israeli and Turkish
authorities.
The lawyers in PCHR Legal Unit are flowing up the developments
regarding the place and circumstances of Abdel Nabi’s detention.
Abdel Nabi is one of the wounded civilians in the latest Israeli
offensive on the Gaza Strip, in which more than 2,008 persons, including 1,670
civilians, were killed and 8,150, mostly civilians, were wounded.
PCHR is gravely concerned over the life of Abel Nabi, especially that
he may be subjected to torture. PCHR calls upon relevant organizations to
immediately intervene to ensure Abdel Nabi’s safety and his release.
