PCHR Concludes the First in a Series of Training Courses on Women’s Rights
On Thursday, 3 August 2006, PCHR has concluded the first in a series of training courses on women’s rights and gender, in the context of a project directed to serve women. The course is also the first of training courses organized by PCHR for the female police this year.
The 16-hour course has been held at PCHR’s office in Gaza City in the period 31 July – 3 August 2006. Eighteen members of the female police in Gaza have participated in the course.
The course has included training sessions on women’s rights, human rights in the administration of justice and the rights of prisoners, as prescribed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women; Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women; Family Law; Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment; Convention on the Rights of the Child; and Code of Conduct for Law Enforcement Officials. Specialized training staff from PCHR administered these sessions, using various training methods.
In his concluding speech, Mr. Raji Sourani, Director of PCHR, congratulated the trainees for successfully fulfilling the requirements of the course, emphasizing the importance of maintaining contacts between them and PCHR and benefiting from the services provided by PCHR. Mr. Sourani further asserted that the course is an introduction to human rights and the trainees should make efforts to know more in this field.
Major Einas Shalabi, chief of the female police, thanked PCHR for organizing this course, and highly appreciated PCHR’s role in defending Palestinian human rights, especially women’s rights. She emphasized that raising the awareness of female police officer on human rights would enhance their performance and their relations with the public.
At the end, Mr. Sourani, Major Shalabi; Ms. Muna Shawa, Director of PCHR Women’s Rights Unit; and Bassam al-Aqra’, Director of PCHR Training Unit, handed certificates of participation to trainees.
